Sawtoothing questions

Featured Replies

Hi All,

I am a bit of a newbie here. I have had a 2008 vRS 170 diesel for about 6 months and my rear tyres are suffering from the 'sawtoothing' and droning noise problem which seems to be pretty common with cars using this platform.

Question 1. Is the problem exclusive to models using ultra low profile tyres and do the 1.4/1.6 models not suffer so much? Would using a higher profile tyre help?

Question 2. Do the revised suspension settings cure the problem?

Question 3. Has anyone tried running the rear tyres parallel and upright? Logic would seem to suggest that non-driven wheels running at an artificially set angle will wear in an odd way.

All these have probably been discussed before, but I haven't been able to find them in the search.

Thanks,

Mark

1) It shouldn't be exclusive to ULPs, but a combination of wide tyres and high camber angles will certainly exascerbate the problem.

The easiest "cure" without changing suspension geometry would seem to be to fit asymetric pattern tyres, and swap the rears side to side whenever the droning starts.

3) A touch of static toe-in with a wishbone or multi-link suspension is always desirable, for driving stability if nothing else.

Any particular asymmetric tyre? Maybe the Pirelli P Zero. Seems to be highly regarded.
