Adjusting full-beam lights

Featured Replies

Is there a way I can adjust the fill beam lights on my pre-FL octy?

at the moment they're lighting the top of hedges very well but not helping on the road very much

cheers

I use mine a lot, I found them very useful for spotting aeroplanes and overhead cables . . . havent got round to adjusting them yet.

Glad I don't have to drive past either of you at night then :wonder:

I'm still able to use the dipped beams - the switch hasn't broken

To make it clear, it's only the full beam that's a problem, dipped beam's fine.

Find that there's a dark patch between the scenery that the dipped beams light up and the area that the full beams light. need to get the full beams down a bit do converge with the dipped beam

Ah sorry, didn't read your OP properly.

I didn't realise you were able to adjust main beam independently to dipped beam?

the switch in the cabin only adjusts the dipped beam. I guess that there's a manual adjustment for the main beam...

Soo your main beam is Ok, did you change bulbs lately for high beam?

Were they fine before? could be that that they were not put in properly ino the socket.

Just a thought.

no, not changed the bulbs, has been like this since I have had it.

I do have a lot of kit in the boot so the front does sit a little high but it's too high even with the boot empty

I suspect that there will be some adjustment to the light housings themselves but need to find out how to do this

In that case the first thing I would do is to take out the bulb from the socket, only one, and put it back in.

If still not ok then I would doo this.

With high beam on in front of a wall try with your hand pull up on the bulb (leave HB on to see)

the beam must goo down, may not hold.

With the bonnet open you can see two hex nuts one above the other on each dipped beam light fitting, these adjust the horizontal and vertical position of the projector lens, this is the same for both halogen and xenon bulbs, you don't need to mess with these unless you intend to fiddle with the dipped beam alignment.

behind the high beam at the rear of the light fitting nearest the centre of the car you will see the white nylon nut that keeps the fitting in place, directly underneath this there is a single upward facing hex nut, this is what adjusts the up/down position of the main beam. This screw adjusts the entire main beam unit - that's the bulb and the surrounding reflector.

In my case the main beams needed four full turns plus one quarter turn clockwise (IIRC) to bring them down to the right level.

They are easy to adjust as explained above, but when I recently replaced a headlamp took it to mot center to adjust ok it was £10 , but they have not been this good since I bought it new, and if they are out will fail MOT anyway

I recently had my dipped beam adjusted under warranty as they were set far too low and were useless - I only noticed as winter drew in and it was dark during my commute. Just take it in and get the dealer to do it for you.

excellent, thanks very much - will get them sorted this afternoon

Just done mine, bored of aeroplanes. I will try them out on a dark road and make any final tweaks. Thanks for the info.

Skomaz's advice was spot-on. mine needed about 6 turnse each, drive back home from the in-laws was much better, can now see the road!

drive back home from the in-laws was much better

I always find the same, compared to the drive there..... :p
