AP Coilovers - Strange Squeaking

Featured Replies

Drivers side Coilover has suddenly started squeaking (started over a week ago)

Very annoying !

Now i took a look up into the arch to double check it was 100% the Coilover unit, and it seems the noise is coming from the yellow rubber bumpstop.

I tried silicone spray, but still noisy.

Now the question is, here's pics of both fronts.

On one side, the bumpstop is near the bottom, and the other, it's at the top...it's the one sitting at the bottom thats noisy.

I'm guessing it should be sitting up at the top ??

Inner strut has play? How old are they

I had the same; cut the bump stops down a bit, its probably sat on/very close to them.

Did mine and now they're silent.

A year old at the end of the month :(

It's not even that low tbh.

But can anyone say where they should be sitting ?

it makes no odds where they sit as long as they are in there, as soon as the car is lowered down and hits a bump they will be up the top anyhow.

Thanks folks

Solution to stop the squeaking then ? lol

There was a thread made and a cure found - durable hard plastic tubing as found on KW and Weitecs is needed to wrap around the top springs. This stops the squeak you mention, I had it done on mine under warranty - 2 years on AP Coilovers.

Thankyou :)

They have massive bump stops for the travel of the stanchion, try taking half an inch to an inch off the stops before you pay loads of money for a plastic 'sleve'. I can't see how the coils 'touching' would cause a squeak, and then retrospectively how covering them with plastic would stop it; they would still touch (although I have my reservations if they even touch in the first place...).

Push the stops up and down on the stanchion; makes a similar 'squeak' right? cutting an inch off will cost you nothing, can be done without removing the strut and may cure your noise.

when you say cut a bit off the bumpstop, i take it you mean from the yellow foam circled section ? emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Yeah, just cut a bit off that. If your good with a stanley blade you can even cut it through teh coils with just a wheel off.

I undid the nuts that hold the stanchion (damper rod) to the top mount, then undid the top drop-link bolt and lowered the shock by dropping the wishbone. You can then wind the spring collar all the way down, push the damper rod in and take out the bump stops. They can then be easily cut with a hacksaw.

Cheers, might give it a go then at some point, mine are weitec but i assume they'l be the same , there wound up for the winter at the moment but did notice a sound last summer so could be worth a go :-]
