Adding reversing camera to Columbus

Featured Replies

Hi all, although I've not received my Superb yet, I've been looking online for options to fit a reversing camera. I've seen a few cameras that are built into the number plate lights, which is probably the easiest option on the Superb, although I understand hooking up to the columbus is the interesting part.

I wouldn't want to start splicing wires and hacking looms, but I found this and wondered whether anyone knew if this (or something similar) would work... video adapter. I don't think it mentions the canbus though, so that might be a problem. I've also heard that when adding extra boxes like these it can cause other functions to stop working, such as the auto volume adjustment.

Any thoughts, as it seems a reasonable price for a plug and play upgrade.

VWNavi.com is the best site for info on VW group satnavs though some info is out of date.

I have a MFD1 pre-colombus in my octavia and it has a mini din connector on the back for video and audio input which can be set in the menu screen.

I have fitted one of the number plate light cameras off ebay. The mounting needing some minor trimming to fit.

I have it plugged into a 7" LCD monitor for testing and it works brilliant. Night vision is good and there are markers in 10cm increments with a stop marker.

The image is reversed as though you are looking in a mirror.I have bought a Mini din adaptor lead off ebay and connected the other end to a modified scart adaptor to give me a phono socket for Video, Audio L&R and a seperate lead which should trigger the camera.

I dont know if the later columbus has a mini din input but if it has its the best way to go. If not you may have to buy the canbus video adaptors but they are expensive circa £60

No din connection on the columbus, you dont need the camera anyway with the columbus. The graphic display shows where everything is, and what each individual parking sensor is doing.

Camera can be added, but it aint cheap.

and you would need to adapt the kit for the superb since a retrofit kit is not available.

Thanks for the replies.

I was just curious really as I know the Columbus is the same unit (RNS-510) as fitted to VW's ad Audi's which can have the camera fitted... it's not that I need it, just that in theory, I could have it :D

I do really like the way the screen shows each of the sensors, although it would be nice if it was possible to adjust the sensitivity. I believe they normally set to max out at about 1 foot from an object, although the ability to adjust that to say 6 inches would be great.

...........keep as posted....some of us might also be intrested in installing.... B)

sorry if i put this in the wrong place but getting desperate .

Hello all need some help advice , i have recently purchase and after market audio system which reverse camera after following the instruction i connected the camera which work fine but only with the engine of ( key in on position) but will not work when the car is running. The plus is connected to a cable that is used for the tow bar(also after market) which runs directly to the Battery, do i need a different power source or is there something else i'm not seeing  i have tried all other possiblities except directly to the fuse please help as it driving me mad

TIA

what a lot of people dont know is

the cars computer can detect the ´cameras additional power consumption when the battery is depleted the cars computer cuts the camera power consumption in order to save battery power and give time for the altenator to recharge the battery thats why it only works when the engine is off :)

....so go measure your battery with the enine off and if it is around 11v something you need to charge up with a ctex battery charge or something similiar og go for a long drive ....assuming your battery is healthy and can hold a load and your altenator is working properly to charge battery up
