Q6600 cpu

4 gig ram

550w psu (FSP)

2x dvd writer

Antec p182 tower

ATI 4870 1gig

I'm thinking about a new gfx card for now, but is there any point ? the new nvidia look tasty !!

As for the mobo etc I'm thinking one of the new I range will do nicely, but is there any need, am I just wasting money

Anyone got any links to good tech sites for comparsion charts etc.

Thoughts here please

Havent you been following my thread!?!? :p

Sandy Bridge is where its at!

If you want to run the latest games with all the settings whacked up high buy the new hardware. Otherwise you're just wasting your hard earned cash.

One of the reasons I ended up buying a PS3 is because I got fet up of upgrading my hardware every 12-18 months.

What would you get for your old hardware on fleabay?

The spec i have just ordered was £807 inc delivery to give you an idea of price.

Intel i5-2500k

Asus P8P67 Pro

8Gb (2 x 4Gb) Corsair Vengeance 1600Mhz DDR3

XFX Radeon HD6850 1Gb

Coolermaster GX 650 PSU

Samsung Spinpoint F3 1Tb

Samsung DVDRW Sata

Corsair A70 Heatsink

Fractal Define R3 Arctic White

What are you looking at any way?

just having a look at products now and I'm up to £513 inc 12gb of ram (Gskill)

I may lob in a new PSU as mine is old as dirt

Not sure about the ram though but the corsair 12 gb kit is only about £30 more.

My main issue now is the gfx card do I replace or leave it for a while ??

Oh yeah I need to get some cash first as well lol

Why not upgrade you graphics card first since you would be doing that no matter what and that would be transferrable into a new system if you decided to go that route then see how you feel with that. Might just be enough to fulfil your urge to upgrade!

Just a suggestion.

Phil

What CPU are you looking at?

Bare in mind that the sandybridge processors are dual channel not triple. So you might be looking at either 8gb or 16gb.

You could always upgrade the graphics card at a later date, it does seem a bit pointless though considering the 4870 is an old girl now.Take a look here for whats best at the moment.

Same as you after reading the bittech review lol

Wtf does triple channel come into things then (AMD)??

8gb will do for now if I'm honest lol

LOL :p

The i7 chips were triple channel memory, i.e. 3 x 4Gb = 12Gb, the boards came with 6 memory slots. These new CPU's have gone back to dual channel so they only have 4 memory slots.

A Q6600 is still good, so why waste your money?

Agreed!

My Q6600 is still going strong and seems to handle demanding stuff pretty well still.

Just new graphics card for now and you might be suprised... especially with a big beasty one! lol

Well.....................

I got home and had a little fiddle and fired fraps (not thraps)

60 fps on my current set up in COD BO, I think the game is jsut choppy tbh

Upgrade plans on hold for now lol

Might start with a few bits though like a SSD or GFX card

Lol.

Don't play that game myself so can't comment.

Been thinking about an SSD for a while myself as a boot/main program drive.

There are some good priced ones coming around now and I found some good speed/make ones before for not too much money.

Phil

My 4890 handles Black Ops well enough, can get choppy in multiplayer due to lot's of lag on some servers.

Still plays FSX well enough, I will go for a 6XXX Radeon to replace it though I think when I can afford it, I need to stick with ATI because of the display port and outputting it to the iMac in target display mode...... But once you have played in 2560 x 1440 theres no going back :)

I have an OCZ Vertex 2 in my Alienware lappy Phil, 120GB Jobbie with the OS and Apps on, data and anything write intensive is on the original sata drive in an eSata enclosure. Works really well for me and I have an SCCM / SCOM / 3 x Exchange 2010 servers running dag on the esata (VM's)

Novatech where the cheapest for it at the time.

60fps will be v-synced... so no doubt higher than that
