Is this Normal / OK / Safe?

Featured Replies

I recently had my totally standard Mk1 Vrs Octy remapped at AMD Woking with the addition of Forge diverter valve and Pipercross panel filter..... All good lots of power very drivable.

1 Week later I managed to get hold of a Cat back Piper exhaust which I fitted. Went for a drive and blew the pipe off the Forge (not tightened up enough? Or too much boost?)

Today I fitted a boost gauge as detailed on here into the FPR piping.

The gauge shows 25hg vacuum when warm but more worryingly on WOT flys round to 20psi possibly more (the gauge only goes to 20psi so cant tell if its much more....)

This is my understanding, AMD probably mapped it to 18-20psi stage 1?

by fitting the cat back ive prob upped the boost 2psi as less restriction?

if im now running over 20psi am I going to kill my turbo?

Also my MPG seems to have gone down by 10 or so!

Should I just ring AMD and get them to map the car with the cat back? (hopefully they wont charge me £££ as ive only just had it mapped stage1? !!!!)

Sorry for the waffle

Tris

Probably not tightened enough my stage 1 boosts to 20psi and is the norm for stage 1.

The fuel consumption will also go down which is to be expected.

Your MPG has gone down since the remap or the exhaust? If you're driving sensibly, it will be thereabouts or in some cases better economy than before. If of course gunning it (which you probably are after only a week) what do you expect :)

Its gone down since fitting the exhaust...... on very low revs pulling away sounds like I may have a slight leak around the cat joint.

Will check that tomorrow. Would a leak affect the economy?

Thanks

Tris

Yes a leak can affect economy but not by a lot, but that together with the exhaust an remap won't help it.

On a motorway/steady run you should average near as damn it the same as standard possibly a bit less but floor it and it'll go down considerably.

Once you've got over the "just been re mapped stage" it'll go back up :giggle:

Thanks for the replies guys. Is it ok to run the car as is with it being remapped with standard exhaust then cat back on afterwards or is it worth getting remapped again now cat back is fitted?

I know I won't get much more If any power but would it run better?

Would the original map be specific for the standard car or do they simply up the boost!

Tris

it's only a cat back so won't have done anything just added a little bit more noise. I did exactly what you've done and have had no problems. If you'd done the DP or decat then it might have been worth getting the map tweaked.

I'd be a bit annoyed with them not fitting the DV properly. It's pretty much the easiest job to do, and they cocked it up!

25inHg is spot on for hot idle, so you've not got any major vacuum leaks.

I don't know anyone with an AmD map, but 20psi sounds about right. I ran 17psi on an APR map, and run 19psi on a Shark map.

I'd be tempted to swap the boost gauge for one that goes to 30psi, so you can see exactly what it peaks at.

Sort the exhaust leak and see what happens.

Mine runs 19psi but I have changed my gauge to a Bar one easier to read and goes higher up than psi!!!! What DP did you put on????

Hmm odd last night when boost gauge first fitted went to 20 psi and stayed now boosting to 20 then settled around 17. .....cold Weather last night?

By dp I take it you mean down pipe? None fitted was a cat back exhaust only.

Thanks Tris

I've got a VDO Vison boost gauge on mine, which goes from 30inHg to 25psi. I prefer psi to Bar personally, as a Bar is such a big unit if you know what I mean! Like 2Bar doesn't sound big, but infact it's massive (29psi)! I just find psi easier to relate to I guess...

Anyway, this is my gauge: http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/109425-newsouth-columnpod/page__hl__newsouth%20columnpod

what is the max safe boost (in psi) on an AUM?

(or AUQ for that matter)

on standard turbo ko3s prob low 20 s psi
