Skoda servicing, whys is gone up so much?

Featured Replies

I was going to service my car myself, but as some pointed out my warranty will be void so Ive asked for a quote. Now, back in late November I was told a 20k service was £175.... now its £215.... thats a massive increase miles above VAT and inflation. Is that about right in other owners experiences?

ask your dealer about the 2 years servicing for 299 + 100 voucher offer. Glad I have signed up now if a single service is 200+ !

Oh well, Ive booked it in anyway.... despite the high increase in price when quoted in November. Have a loan car booked, just got to pay £7 for insurance and put fuel back in which isnt too bad tbh.

Servicing is money for old rope with a garage.

After replacing filters and oil change there's nothing left to change on my 2005 Fabia VRS.

Checking levels, visual inspections and testing joint's for irregular play/ movement. (That's it.)

Oh! almost forgot a magic stamp in your little service history book. (Lots think this is the Holy Grail)

Skoda genuine parts with oil about £85.00.

Labour 2 hours approx £50 an hour, - final total £185.00 approx.

Oil change and oil filter (labour charge only) is £25.00 by my local independent garage.

My tendency is to replace all 4 filters, engine oil change.

Check levels Power steering/ gear-box (yes gear-box) - (battery sealed for life), master cylinder, washer bottle on-going.

Check brake pads & discs for wear/ damage, tyre condition. (That's it.)

Then take car for it's MOT test where all critical stuff will be under scrutiny, and repair what's failed.

Filters I use are mostly non-genuine Skoda, with 5 litres engine oil come to about £65.00 approx.

Every other year £5.00 for one litre of master cylinder brake fluid for total brake system flush/replacement.

No doubt my statement will make some sparks, and will look for more creative info.

Heres the rub, the dealer will change my oil, filter and pollen filter and then look at other stuff for £215... now thats a lot for looking at stuff.

I have a scooter, a big Piaggio 400cc which has a service each year at a main dealer by the best scooter mechanic bar non.

The following is done.... oil and filter change, gear oil change, air filter clean and re oil, valve clearances checked and adjusted, breather system cleaned out, spark plug replaced, transmission belt renewed and associated rollers, clutch comes out and is cleaned out, all brake pads come out to be checked and pins regreased, coolant and brake fluid changed, rear wheel is removed and axle greased plus all the visual checks and linkage lube and at a cost of around £190.

So, why so much for the car?

it's because of high overheads and costs

Like me, I cost a fortune.

But I don't do servicing all day, in fact very little. I'm usually buried in a wiring job somewhere or listening to someones rattle etc. We claim for what we can if its warranty or charge whats reasonable if its retail. But service work is bread and butter that brings the money in so its got to be profitable and make as much as possible, overheads are huge especially in winter where us techies refuse to work unless the workshop is heated..lol Our workshop is fairly small six ramps but it still takes 20k or so a month just to open up before we make any profit.
