Diesel Or Petrol?

Featured Replies

I stand to be corrected, but the prices for diesels are not as heavily discounted now are they not? Petrol models are still VAT free.

DTD prices are showing as £24151 for the 170 4x4 and £20770 for the Tsi 4x4. So just under £3400. Around £3600 difference on the fwd DSG models.

I was just merely pointing out that real difference is more like £2-3000 not the £5000 stated earlier.

Looking at used prices on Skoda website, used 1.8 Elegance estates are £3-4K + less than equivalent 170 Diesels so it's likely that in 3-4 years time you'll see a similar £2-3K difference in favour of the diesel in residual value. For used cars it's the same as new, supply and demand and in the UK the diesels, especially the 170, are in greater demand.

So purely on monetary terms for the majority of people the diesel is likely to win out at 3 or more years of ownership.

But as above comments have shown, both are good and cost of fuel is all relative. If it was all down to costs we'd all be buying a 1-2 year old car to save a lot in depreciation! ;) ;)

But it's not all about the price!!

Can anybody advise me on the reasons I should choose one or the other, other than the 20% saving offer on the petrol at the moment.

Delivery times are not a massive issue for me and I will probably keep the car for a minimum of 3 years.

I'm having the same dilemma now. As others have said above, logic sometimes goes out the window. I WANT a grunty diesel, but a wimpy petrol can be had for thousands less up front. And quicker delivery.

So do I logically calculate mpg, price per litre, miles per year, possible residual value, etc, etc. Or do I just place an order now for the diesel? I think I'll sleep on it. Again.

If you are felxible on colour and options you'd be surprised how soon you can get a new one. I rang a few of the brokers and a few weeks later had a new 170 Elegance 4x4 Estate and at a good price.

Well, why not have a grunty petrol then and go for the V6?

Looks like even after doing all the sums you will still be mulling over. Unless-

1. Financial aspects are so crucial that you must consider residuals economy etc, in which case the arguement for Greenline becomes compelling

2.You have a definate preference for petrol or as it seems diesel

I probably will. My regular motto ain't Carpe Diem for nothing

The V6 is just being greedy. And as for the amount of juice it would use. EEK!

I use 2 wheels when I want to go fast.

Order the diesel and spend 5 months reading the manual and searching the forums for good hints and tips, so that when it does eventually turn up, it'll feel like you've owned it for weeks... :D

I wonder which engine Babs would have picked if he had any input?

Option is easy! I have both (company car derv), petrol for private use and low miles, company car derv! (18TSi is very fast of the mark so forget your torque.)

I've had a first offer of 3% off brochure price and possibly 6 months delivery on a 170 DSG Estate. Think I'll sleep on it zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
