how low can i safely go?

Featured Replies

hey guys,

ill hopefully be purchasing some coilovers in the coming months, and was just wondering how low can i lower my car before encountering any of the common problems? shortened drop links is one problem i know of. i dont know much about coilovers and lowering etc so all comments and opinions welcome

cold i also ask for some pics of cars lowered 30mm or there abouts, on standard alloys if possible  in the meantime will have a search to see if any show up

last thing, how careful would i need to be driving a 30mm lowered car over ramps etc? and do coilovers require much maintenence?

many thanks, jordan

Droplinks shouldn't be a problem with coilovers down 30mm from standard AIUI - but you can achieve pretty much that with lowering springs:

the only real problem is the low sump guard, if you go very low you can quite easily rip it off, but i just take it steady over speed bumps etc emoticon-0148-yes.gif

ive just got a set of AP's but havent fitted them yet although ill b goin fairly low, i was told i wouldnt need shorter drop links once you have fitted and set up ur coilovers id cover the threads on the adjusters with grease or something similar incase you want to adjust them again in the future

someone actually suggested to me that i cover the threads in electrician tape as the grease attracts dirt emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Not sure about that - it'll trap moisture and cause corrosion, surely? At least with a decent layer of grease, you can hose it off if you need to...

grease will attract dirt but keep moisture out, grease or battery terminal anti corrosion spray would work, tape will come off after a while and let water in

you may be correct chaps, tbh ive got the weitecs which are galvaniosed iirc, havent put anything on them but clean them whenever i do the car and they adjusted nicely after 6 months , just before xmas emoticon-0148-yes.gif

30mm is buggar all, you'll be fine up to 75mm

I`ll say one thing, not sure if you got many around your way, the speed bumps that are just in the middle of the road, because of the already mentioned low sump, it`ll rip it straight out.

Matt

Tip - speed bump = 1st gear, sod the traffic just go slowly :)

For 30mm, would a set of springs (and shocks) not be better? I mean, you can't change the ride height, but they're generally cheaper and less maintenance and I think usually comfier.
