Main and Dipped Beam, and a few other questions?

Featured Replies

I have a 56 plate VRS and i am slightly confused after reading various topics.I have a couple of questions. My car has Xenons fitted as standard and are self levelling. I would like to know if my car is Bi-Xenons?? and if i am right does Bi-Xenons means that one bulb gives the low and main beam. The reason i ask is that my low beam light is crystal clear, but my main beam isn't as good. If this is not the case does it mean i have a halogen main beam? If it is the case that i have a halogen main beam, can i then buy a HID Kit for my main beam alone?

Could someone also tell me how to do i check if the self levelling system is working.

Off subject at what mileage should i be having the cambelt changed?

Finally:-

My nephew also has a 56 plate seat ibiza, i know this isn't a seat forum but any advice would be much appreciated. He has halogen bulbs and he wants to fit a HID Kit as well. Could anyone tell me whether he needs to purchase two kits, one for the dipped beam and the other for main beam??

Many Thanks

The Octavia (both pre and post facelift) has standard xenon's, not bi xenon's.

This means xenon dipped and halogen main.

Some bed time reading for you here, the debate rumbles on for a few pages but it is confirmed that they are xenon.

Due to the effectiveness of the xenon's you will notice that main beam looks dimmer and more yellow.

Not sure there is a HID kit available for main beam but you can upgrade the tungsten bulbs with blue/white ones easily enough.

If you are parked in front of a wall at night, start the engine and turn on the xenon's. You should then see them perform a little up and down dance as they auto adjust.

Skoda UK recommend a cambelt every 40,000 miles.

In a Bi-Xenon (or Bi-Halogen, like on Fabia II) and single light source is used to give both low and high-beam via the use of a mechnical shutter. In low beam mode the shutter obscures part of the projector lens, In high beam the shutter is pulled out of the way (via a solenoid).

Cars that use both seperate HID's for both low and high beam usually have a seperate halogen bulb for the 'flash' function (HID's don't like being turned on and off rapidly).

You Skoda is likely to have HID low beam and halogen high beam.

Most SEAT Ibiza models use refelector headlights with a shade over the low beam (H7) bulb. They are not really suitable for HID conversion.
