diesel gear box

Featured Replies

can anyone tell me how to tell the differance between a petrol and diesel Felicia box. I really think my pickup has a petrol box.

iirc no markings apart from a part number on the bellhousing

not an awefull lot of difference except gear ratios/final drive ratio.

there are 2 different 'series' of gearboxes in the felicia but they are all interchangeable between models

Gear ratios are the same, just the final drive. If your diesel has a petrol box in it, it'll rev more, but I don't have figures here, nor a rev counter on my mum's diesel felly to go from.... if I get a chance I'll drive it on the rev limiter in a gear and let you know how fast it is...

Petrol boxes can have either a 3.83 or 4.12 final drive, whereas diesels are 3.58. The are a few small differences in ratios pre-1997, but nothing major. I remember this coming up a while back so I'll see if I can find the thread with more numbers in it.

Couldn't see the one I was thinking of, but found the one with all the numbers.

In brief, using the '97 onward figures, 60mph in 5th would show:

2470 rpm with a diesel box - code 1

2646 rpm with a 3.83 (1.3/1.6) box - code 6

2842 rpm with a 4.12 (1.3) box - code 4

Hope that helps.

edit 2: In fact, it seems the serial number stamped on the top casing between the bellhousing and the diff is in the format XXXXXXX A B C D, where A and B give the year/month of manufacture and C gives the final drive type - I've added the codes above.

diesel box should see around 95mph on the goverenor where a petrol one would be around 82ish (all on private roads of course ossifer)

In my Fun I have seen the needle get to 100 Mph. (No truckman, rear seats deployed and the windows open). Not entirely sure what the BMW driver I was behind must have thought when he looked in the mirror. ;)

Well, according to the AA road test the 1.6 hatch will top out at 104, so that's not bad going!

mine bounces off the rev limited at about 120mph but I have a 1300mpi box on mine, the engine still wants to give more though :giggle:

so if i can get this right, the difference from a 13gearbox to a 19diesel is just the final drive? also anyone using a 13 petrol gbox on 19diesel engine? does it sound a bit noisy ?

the diff unit is a lot stronger on a diesel box and you will find that the engine is revving harder at 60mph with a 1.3 box
