removing centre vent unit

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if it easy to remove the centre vent/hinged cubby hole unit in the top centre of the dash? I have a sporadic tinny rattle coming from (I think) below it. I thought it was my sunglasses in the cubby hole but it is the same with nothing in it, and whether the vents are open or closed.

I'd like to see if there is something flapping about maybe between the vent unit and the radio but don't want to risk breaking something !!

I took my one out by prying it up with something blunt that won't damage anything. It's held in by a bunch of spring clips, start at the front edge and pry it upwards and it should just pull up and out. Watch out for the wire to the hazard switch.

Thanks guys, that worked exactly right. Don't know that I found anything specific but I will find out tomorrow!!

Does the radio panel come out as easily or is that asking for trouble !!?

Start from the bottom by the ashtray, and pull gently towards to. Work upwards, and you'll find that the radio surround panel apprears much more tightly secured along the top of the radio. I won't say be brutal, but yes, be quite forceful and it will pull off. It's far more resiliant than it may appear!

The radio securing screws are then accessible -- 4 x Torx 20 screws holding the head unit into the dash.

To refit, start at the top, and click the panel in, working down towards the bottom around the switches.

Thanks Mike, I'll see if this appears to be necessary over the next couple of runs - maybe I'll try it after a couple of stiff brandies!

Never ceased to be amazed on this site that as soon as I need info, somone posts the answer before I have written anything.

One of the centre air vent vanes is jammed out of position, on my 3 week old VRS CR DSG. Took it to the local hand wash after 1st week. Think someone stretched to clean windscreen and leaned on the open vent, just before I told them don`t bother, it`s a new car!

I will try to prise ns vent to relocate vane.

Thanks
