Track experience of Abingdon Airfield?

Featured Replies

I'm soon to be taking the Octavia to a track day at Abingdon Airfield. Will be my first ever go, hence choosing an airfield.

Aside from Koni coilovers, a de-cat and a recent full service, she's a bog standard 110 TDi :( I'm going just for the experience and to have fun, but also hoping not to get in too many peoples way, so has anyone on here have experience of this place and maybe a few hints or just general track info that might get me lapping a bit quicker?

I'm guessing the biggest response will be not to take a car with that sort of power to weight ratio on a track! You guys are the experts, so if it's an overwhelming consensus then I'll reconsider emoticon-0106-crying.gif

Thought I had been there, but just realised I hadn't. Done two airfield days closer to Bath though. Just be aware of faster cars and get out there way when it is safe to do so :) Good place to learn on these circuits due to run-off.

just use you mirrors, when faster cars approach indicate which way your are going to pull over to allow them past and give them room. All will be good

As well as technique, it's worth researching the track as much as possible so you've got an idea of how best to take each corner, etc. There's more info out there for the major circuits, obviously, but even something like this that a quick search turned up could be useful:

Personally, however, the last time I was on the tarmac at Abingdon was an airshow, when the RAF were still flying the Vulcan.

Also don't get hung up on being 'slow' or think too much about other cars (beyond safety and courtesy as mentioned) - it's about enjoying yourself with what you have, remember! ;) I did a track day at Brands on my rattly old GPZ500 when the majority of the novice group was on litre superbikes - it didn't take long before I found myself being held up in the corners, though. Power isn't everything...
