what do you recommend?

Featured Replies

looks like my daily mileage is going to go up dramatically very soon if i get my new job

we are looking at 54miles a day round trip, half decent roads 40-70mph etc

i think i may need to change my currennt octy but what would you recommend ?

i have my car and i would probably spend up to £10,000 in total for the right car

i do like my car to look good and have a bit of go in it :p

my octy at the moment is touching 250bhp and on my last trip the fuel economy rose to 33 from an average of 25 mpg on the round trip to my new employer

last job was town traffic etc

my drive is similar to yours but being in wales, have lots of mountains to climb. I do a 75 mile trip each day to work and get on average 58mpg from my 2.0vrs diesel DSG. The mad thing is that its really not much more ( about £10.00) than my last car which was, wait for it, a smart brabus!

That's got to be from your onboard computer?

I'm betting your real MPG is less than that.

My mpg on the onboard, and that measured by using Fuelly, are within 2 mpg, so they can be quite accurate. That is across 6000 miles of varied driving.

I would struggle to get 58mpg on that run, even after the remap!

Realistically a 2 litre diesel will return 45-55mpg depending how you drive and how many hills there are!

I would swap with more dosh for a Cr diesel VRS

Keep the Vrs and spend £4-5000 on a small Diesel h/back, best of both worlds.

If you can suffer it I could get 86mpg from a 2004 100hp diesel Clio. Nice engine but the rest of the car is a bit 'French'.

did the same journey today and got 38mpg , not bad but think i fancy a diesel vrs octy

In your shoes I would be tempted to get a 90BHP Mk1 Octy Diesel, as your daily commute, which you can probably get a decent one for around 4-5k.

I owned 2 of these & mdk1 currently has 1 he uses, you would be getting an engine that will do in excess of 250k miles, you will get over 50mpg ( real world) keeping to speed limits & not thrashing it ( expect just under 50 if you do ).

My local dealer provided virtually all the Octy taxis in my area, & even told me of a taxi driver that got just over 200k miles out of his clutch emoticon-0104-surprised.gif.

This would give you best of both worlds, your current car for evenings & weekends, & the 'taxi' for work.
