Lumpy idle - leak

Featured Replies

Car is in the garage and has been for a few days now. It started running lumpy at idle down to 500rpm and then surging sometimes. Garage have diagnosed various things as it showed up an air leak. He thinks it is down to a split in the intercooler where it meets the side tanks if that make sense as when he sprays carb cleaner the revs pick up. Has anyone else had a similar issue with the intercooler giving up? It's a 2.0 tfsi and has done 39k. Whilst it is in I have changed to a revision d dv and am now worrying it's the Pcv and the intercooler isn't at fault. I am not hugely mechanically minded but slightly unsure it might not fix it and will be paying out for no reason.

I have been googling like mad on all the vw forums and on here but can't find exactly the same issue sonny help would be greatly appreciated.

The intercooler is going on tomorrow hence the worry now...

I had a similar thing on my tfsi engine during the early part of last year, a diagnostic from the stealers showed 5 faults which all pointed to an air leak. My mechanic had a play but couldn't find a problem, then just by accident I cured the problem by remove the engine cover (perhaps a trapped hose???) I have since replaced the intake with an EVOMS, including replacement engine, the problem has never re-occured!

Thanks for the reply. I will call him tomorrow to check first mtgs only thing is the intercooler has been of and in again so the car needs rebuilding to test each time. It does seem to ring true about the intercooler being at fault as when he sprays in one point the revs pick up. I haven't really got much choice I guess. It's annoying as I could have it remapped etc for the money it's cost to cost me!

Could the EGR be faulty? I think if it doesn't close it'll cause the engine to idle lumpy or maybe it's if it stays closed?
