Can anyone give me any advice on where the ariel cable travels once it leaves the back of the stereo head unit, does it have any joints/connections before it gets to the roof.

im assuming a break in it somewhere is the cause of my intermittent FM reception.

It's more likely to be a dodgy aerial base than anything else.
