Fitting a MFD3 Columbus please help.

Featured Replies

Right my next project is to purchase a MFD3 unit, but as you guys already know, the knowledge is nil. I have been looking on ebay and I have seen them priced between £400-£500.

I have also seen them advertised with some of them with Version 7 which has full postcode facility and also advertising as being 2010 models also some models were finishing with the last number being 8 and others 8A.

My car is a 56 plate PD170 Vrs 2006/2007 model, with maxidot.

I have heard that some units drain the battery? on some cars don't know whether my car comes into that category and a Canbus is required (whatever that is and where to get it and how much I don't know) and whether I need it on my car.

I also understand that I require a new facia, I have climatronic( part number I don't know)

I would also like it to play dvd's whilst on the move ( I am aware about law regulations re that) even though I don't know what part to get for that and where to get it from? And whether it would play back up copies of my dvd's and also get it to work with the maxidot.

I am also aware that I need to get it then put on a vag com .

I don't need the Bluetooth kit as I already have a parrot 3100 for my phone which is connected to my current radio.

Connecting it to an ipod would also be nice( do I need a part for that?

I have also got after market reversing sensors so I don't know whether the can be connected to the Columbus?

So my question is does anyone on here fit them and if so can they advise me which one to get from eBay . I don't expect anything for nothing and I would gladly pay an agreed price. I am also prepared to travel. I live in Bangor North Wales but travelling is not a problem as I would really like to get one.

Many thanks

Playing DVDs on the move is possible with the Columbus, but there are some caveats.

If you go for TV free device, then this blocks the canbus speed pulse from reaching the columbus. The Columbus uses the speed pulse from the wheel speed sensors, and steering sensors to assist in navigation. Net result is, that without this data you will jump along the road in steps because the GPS is only periodically checked against the road speed/steering sensors and you could miss your turning as a result. These devices are also blocked in the newer firmware versions.

Some firmware versions permit it via a hidden button press combo, but touch anything or adjust the volume and the picture will be lost.

Come on guys there must be someone out there willing to fit it for me, PLEASE!!

There must be someone on here that can advise me and be able to fit it. As I said I will gladly travel and pay for the job to be done.

Where are you based, I'll fit it for you depending on your location. I am down in dorset 99% of the time.

Thanks for replying mannyo. Dorset is a hell of a long way away from Bangor, but your the only one that has been good enough to offer and I appreciate that. Would like to give you a ring so I can have a chat with you about it but I can't seem to find a way of sending you a pm with my mobile number.

if you click on his name to the left of the post, that will take you to his profile. There's then a link that says "send me a message"

Thanks sdenny, but I am on my mobile and it wouldn't allow me to send it via his mail, but somehow it allowed me to send it via his email.

its very straight forward, follow the guide on octavia-vrs.com for an MFD2 install as its basically the same.

it will work fine without coding, so no need to worry about that.

Depending on you current headunit you may need to swap the cd changer ground pin if you want to continue to use it.

Have seen and read that post numerous times, and was totally confused. Also read about battery drain on some vehicles, hence why I needed to know if I needed to buy a canbus(whatever that is) plus I didn't know what model to buy from eBay. Hence why I submitted this post, plus I read that various things need to be ticked via the vag com. I am one of these people that know where to put the diesel in the car and that's about it. It is easier and safer for me to pay someone to do it properly. I have always had good advice from members of this forum. So it was the best place to ask. Did you get my mail ?

You absolutely don't need any help to fit. Super, super easy job for anyone.

Pull the old surround off, unscrew and remove your old unit, slide the new one in and screw it in and pop the new surround on. That's essentially it.

With the age of your car, you will face the battery drain issue with more recent firmwares though (which most on ebay will have installed). So, I would recommend loading a recent firmware but that has the old can gateway code substituted into it. We can give you a link to this to download and burn.

Thanks for the reply Nick P , but you obviously don't know me. Let me paint you a picture. I suffer with OCD, amongst other problems. The only information I understood from your reply is that my battery will drain. The rest meant nothing to me. I don't even know which model to purchase from eBay. I am that inept. I cannot afford to go to a dealer and pay full price plus fitting, hence why I asked on the forum. The only thing I want is to get a Columbus fitted in my car. I know for some people it is a piece of cake, but I assure you it would be an impossible task for me. If I have to travel all the way to dorset to have it done properly, then I will have to unless someone nearer to me can assist? Basically if I can't get anyone on here to fit it for me, and tell me what to buy, then I am stuck with my original, so please someone help me out here.

If you can track down a 1Z0 035 680A unit, this will work with your Octavia. The 3T0 unit will work but will need coding which I cannot do unfortunatly.

Like this one, send a message to the seller asking if the can supply with an older firmware as the one installed will cause the battery to go flat.
