Creamy gunk on dipstick

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I noticed a little creamy gunk on the bottom of the dipstick of my mother-in-law's Jetta (not a Skoda, but still relevant to people here), it's a 2.0 FSI ('55). Should I be worried about this, or is it just a symptom of lots of short journeys when the engine isn't getting up to temp?

I had a similar concern before we bought the wife's Leon (1.9 TDI) but it was under the oil cap rather than on the dipstick - I was advised back then by the dealer and this forum that it was due to short journeys (i.e. test drives) and would go away when used normally, which is exactly what happened.

Cheers,

Richard.

It'll mean there's water in the oil. Lots of short journeys cause a build up of condensation, so take it for a good drive(I'd say at least 30/40 miles) to clear it out. If it's still there then you may have, worst case, head gasket that's going.

Hope it's just condensation that's there.

small amounts are perfectly normal in cold weather - if there is loads, or it doesn't clear after a long journey you may have a problem. Keep an eye on coolant levels and if they are low or keep dropping get it checked out

Thanks for the replies, put my mind at rest! Why does it get worse in cold weather though?

Same reason your windscreen mists up- condensation forms inside the engine and doesn't get evaporated off.
