Clio 182 Cup

Featured Replies

I know a few of you have owned Clio's on here and switched. A friend of mine is looking to get a clio 182 cup!

Could you please help my cause in telling him why not to buy a french car for 13300?

1) Fabia remapped still works out cheaper...

2) Build Quality?

3) Frenchness?

any more are welcome

If i could have some horror owner stories that would be great

Well, it has apparently a bone shattering ride, a peaky engine, expensive insurance, poor reliability, looks like a wheelbarrow with its twin pipes, is driven by chavs, might spontaneously (sp) combust on your drive (that DID actually happen to a number of 172 owners), has a poor driving position and feels like a bog standard one inside.

There you go.... there some reasons, but they do admittedly have their plus points too - they are very quick, handle very well and are good fun to drive, so horses for courses eh?

Number 1 reason for not buying a Clio.

The badge.

And I never thought when I was young that a Skoda owner would ever be able to look down on a badge.

Do like them and price wise not much difference(local garage to us asking

The one plus point is he said that he doesnt like VAG so i said that counts out VW, Bently and Skoda, so you can comfortably have a cupra R and not worry :D - minor technicality because he thought VAG was VW Audi Group :D.

What alternatives are there for a french bag o crap that breaks down and looks pikey?

A workmate has a 182, it's 6 months old, and every now and then it just won't start.

You need a push start or an AA man to get it started. I couldn't live with that.

That's not a very nice way to describe your mate!

Oh, or do you mean an "alternative to" rather than "alternative for"? ;)

What are his criteria?

Rob.

erm... i think i'd buy the clio cup..... cos its much more fun... but the Fabia is defo the more sensible choice... which is prob what sells the Clio... ironically

Lol i mean the car ;). He has got a Roadster at the mooment and he's had it for a month. I dont believe a higher car can be more fun to drive than something with NO body roll at all.

His criteria are he had a renault 19 years ago and liked it, even though it was a bag o sh**e. His roadster is leaking from the wing mirrors and has been told a fix for it is in march, but a bit of water after terrential rain made him angry and he wants to trade it in for a clio cup. I told him i would have more respect if he bought a mini cooper S and thats saying something... by the way i hate french cars.

I'm not saying its not fast though or fun, but when he has a go at someone for remapping his car (because there is no point anymore as cars are built to tried and tested specs) then goes and spends another 3k on a car which is faster and worse built... it makes no sense

Steady!!

Sorry the 2 stripes remind me of a nova with "sports stripes" on it :)

Also you will find that when i dont like something, i dont like it and wont hold back :)

...they do admittedly have their plus points too - they are very quick, handle very well and are good fun to drive...

those are the reasons that people considering getting a car like the 182 wouldn't want a Fabia vRS, a fairly standard medium sized hatch that happens to have a pretty torquey engine bolted in the front of it. like you said horses for courses ;)

It's almost a pity that they put the vRS badge on the Fabia, it means that it's constantly going to be compared to the balls-out hot hatches...

To be honest, I wouldn't bother buying a 182 cup, I'd go for a vanilla 182 with the cup option packs fitted. You can get them from a broker for around 13K, you get the performance of the cup, plus the leather interior and toys (xenons, climate etc) that the cup lacks for a surely not noticeable 20Kg weight penalty.

Depends what your calling the 'cup' version! As you can get a 182 with cup option pack (

I had the real Clio Cup which was a stripped out 172 not the new 182 with cup pack.

Mine spent most of it's time in the dealers (which are useless) and was glad to see the back of it when it was writen off.

It's FRENCH!

What more does he need to know???

That was my response :D

Renault's 19 years ago were a bag of shyte... :D

13800 is alot for a 182 cup especially when you take into acount depreciation about 50% in 3 years.

better of if her really wants a clio going mk2 phase 2 172/cup altho he will get annoyed at not having ac in the cup and also a bloody nasty seat fabric
