Porsche 911 - 4S...........Is it AWD?

Featured Replies

Hi guys....

Still on the hunt for what should replace the Z4 this year. I have seen a few 911 4S's up for sale on auto trader.

I assume the 4 stands for AWD??? Or am i being a numpty here??

Yes.

4 = 4x4 :thumbup:

ISTR Top Gear reckoning the 4S didn't have any benefits over the S. Or was it the 4S wasn't any better than the 4? :wonder:

They said the 2wd was better than the 4, as they have plenty of traction and the 2wd is lighter and so handles better. Or something similar.

The 2wd S is supposed to give the most bang for the buck.

Hi mate...unsure really...

Bit worried as the more research i do it seems the early models had major engine problems. RMS and IMS oils and shafts going etc...

From what i gather the anything over 2003/2004 and the car should be decent...hopefuly!

Porsche 911 Carrera 4 is 4 wheel drive, Carrera 4S is 4 wheel drive and has the wide body from the Turbo, so more desirable and expensive.

Various Porsche specialists are able to offer kits to modify the 996 engine to prevent failure of the RMS and intermediate shaft, but they're not exactly cheap (although cheaper than a new engine!). Talk to a specialist like Hartech in Bolton, they should be able to offer more guidance on the engines and they may have a buyers guide on their website (they do for the 944 and 968 anyway).

911 996 4S = loads of grip and a very big grin :D

My mate has one and uses it to give me brown trouser moments on a regular basis.

Buying advice - check all rads and AC rads for damp patches. Dust, dirt, leaves build up at the bottom and cause them to rot. Not easy to see unless front bumper taken off. A very common fault on these.
