Crank Shaft Speed Sensor

Featured Replies

Hi

Had a flashing glow plug light and solid engine management light on the dash for a couple of days. Got a diagnosis, it come back reading that the engine speed sensor (crank shaft speed / pulse sensor) was sending an implausable signal and that it is intermittent.

Removed the engine cover on the hunt for the crank shaft speed sensor and think I have found it. It's the one just behind the oil filter housing just to the right of the alternator. It's white and is clipped into a wiring loom that heads off into different directions.

Can someone confirm this or show me a picture of the correct one. I pick the new one up tomorrow and would like to replace the old one myself. Is there an easy way to do this or a step by step guide somewhere? If not can someone write me a real quick one?

Much appreciated guys, thanks.

P.S - Part number is (038 957 147 E) Sensor number is G28, £35-40 from TPS

Is it definitely the crank sensor that you need?

I replaced that on SWMBOs 1.4TDI, but the fault code was actually for the cam position sensor. That didn't fix the problem either as the cam timing was slightly out causing the implausible signal when the ECU compared the measurements from the two sensors.

The code wasn't 16705 was it?

If so, that is the cam position sensor.

Thats the code yes. Idiots told me if was crank sensor. Where is that located? I'll try that first instead. Will have to order tomorrow now. You don't happen to know part number do u?

Did you resolve it in the end and how did u do it?

I thought I'd resolved it this time last year by adjusting the cam pulley, but we've had the warning lights back on and off again this since the weather turned really cold. If that is the code, it is the camshaft sensor, not the crankshaft, but I think that it only indicates that there is a difference between the two readings that the ECU was expecting, so there is not necessarily a fault with the sensors.

I've changed both sensors and the battery;

When the weather gets warmer I'll have another look at the cam timing because I think it must still be slightly out.

Can't help with part numbers I'm afraid as the 1.4TDi is a 3 cylinder so the senors will most likely be different.

Thanks for info dude. Must go to bed dont have many hours before i get up for work lol. My car is at garage waiting for morning when suspension goes on. I'll hav my mechanic check timing first

ExAudiSi: did you ever manage to solve your problem? I'm stuck with the same symptoms, and I'm a bit curious to what I should try and fix first.

What location are you ?
