Oil for 1.9 TDI Octavia

Featured Replies

Should be a simple question, but I'm having difficulty getting a definitive answer and the handbook is unclear.

The car is a 1.9 90hp TDI, not PD, now on fixed interval servicing.

what is the required oil spec in terms of 'VW' codes ?

If its on fixed servicing then any good brand 10w40 oil will do just fine, Castrol Magantec performance oil is what we use.

is there not a relevant vw5??.?? then ?

The relevant VW code should be in the handbook, but it is a safe bet that the Castrol oil will meet or exceed it. If it meets the spec (it will be somewhere on this site if not in the handbook) the spec code will be printed on the back of the container.

A multigrade high lubricity oil which meets specs VW 505 00 and 500 00, or specs VW 505 00 and 505 01.

A multigrade oil meeting spec VW 505 00 (Note 1) or spec ACEA B3 - 96 (but read Note 2 carefully for limitations).

Note 1: A date not earlier than 11/92 should be indicated after this VW standard.

Note 2: This oil must only be used once for topping up within the specified exchange cycle if no approved engine oil is available.

let me quote you from the handbook -

'Multigrade high lubricity oils

Specification vw505.00 only in combination with vw500.00 or vw505.01 (both specifications must be stated on the can)

specification vw 505.01 (engines with unit injection system, code ATD)

Multigrade oils

Spec vw505.00 (a date not earlier than 11/92 should be indicated after this VW standard)

Spec ACEA B3-96 (this oil must be used once for topping up within the specified exhcange cycle if no approved engine oil is available)

Now to me and I suspect most people, the difference between 'multigrade oil' and 'multigrade high lubricity oil' is a total mystery, and the rest of it is simply garbage - you may choose to infer what it means, but it is actually gibberish :thumbdwn:

A multigrade high lubricity oil should give better engine protection than a straight multigrade oil so opt for the former. Go to Halfords, a filling station or wherever, look for the section where oils for diesel engines are displayed, and choose any make you want which has VW 505 00 and 500 00 or 505 00 and 505 01 listed on the container. Is that simple enough?

I'm looking at the possibility of putting a group buy together for some decent ones.

If it's that simple, why are Skoda customer services, who are well aware the car is now on fixed interval servicing, saying it must be VW506.00 ?

VW506.00

For all diesel engines without unit injectors (PD) with variable service intervals.

SEA 0w-30

Guy.

If the car is now on fixed service intervals then surely it should have been recoded from QG1 to QG2 - in which case my information above, which is straight from the Owner's Manual, is correct?
