Got the hubs for the 312mm conversion...

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Some of you may know I'm in the process of collecting bits to carry out the 312mm brake conversion on my non-vRS Fabia. I'm almost there, just need discs and pads which are a doddle to find. Skoda were wanting over £400 total for the correct hubs and wheel bearings, but I have just taken delivery of a set from a 312mm-equipped Ibiza Mk4 for considerably less than that.

The seller assured me that they are in perfect working order with no noises, and on visual inspection all seems well, but would it be prudent to replace the wheel bearings in them prior to fitting them to the car? Bearing in mind I'm looking at not far off £200 for the bearings alone. Are they a common part to fail?

Cheers,

Andrew

I believe the term "chocolate bearings" has been used to refer to vag wheel bearings im afraid :'( At least this was when mine went a while ago, everyone then told me how much of a common issue it was at the time. Might be worth doing

Hmm, I had a funny feeling that was the case. Back to the stealers I go! :wonder:

Thanks for your reply

I'd stick them on myself... Why change them now when you could get 20k or more (or less) out of them?

£200 for bearings :o

I'm with Matt, I'd stick em in then it's done.

I think the 312mm hubs I got to do the mongrel conversion in 2005 still have the same bearings in them they came with from the breakers yard.... I don't remember doing a bearing at any time.

I think I'll play it safe and renew them while they're off the car, at least then it's done like you say :)
