Noddy question - How to collect and dispose of oil

Featured Replies

Hey all,

Around these parts, it'll apparently cost me £60 for someone to change my oil and oil filter! I'm assuming it'll cost less to do it all myself.

I can probably figure it out with my Haynes manual, but there is one gap in my knowledge. I'm sure there's a pretty obvious answer, so please forgive me!

What would I use to collect the oil, and how would I dispose of it? Is there a special name assigned to an oil collector device, or perhaps would such a device be made out of existing household goods?

Thanks all!

Nick

I collect in an old washing up bowl, then transfer to the bottle of the new oil.

Our tip or 'household waste collection center' has faciilites now for oil, oil filters, batteries etc.

Might be worth trying them - free too.

Use a washing up bowl and drain the used oil back an old oil container using a funnel. Take it to your local recycling centre and don't dump it down the drain

Beaten! :p :giggle:

I picked up a large oil pan from Machine Mart for about £8/9 a few years back and it has a spout for pouring the oil into a container. As already mentioned, most civic amentity sites now have the facility to dispose of motor oils free of charge.

Also - I think in my last service bill the garage charged me £50 for the oil, so it maybe worth spending the extra £5 (once adding on a filter) to get someone else to do it.

Not sure, but you might need a new sump plug too. If so, and that oil price is right, then £60 isn't too bad IMO!

A baking tray works well for me. Cost 99p & fits under the car easily, holds about 5-6 litres.

just use a basin and throw it down the drain lol :giggle:

Thanks all,

I shall purchase a basin, assuming 5L is enough to contain all of the old oil. There's a recycling center about half a mile away from my house, so all should be well!

I've got a new oil filter on the way, and I've currently got about 4L of 3-year-old left over oil (10W/40) from a previous car. Does anyone know if 10W/40 partial synthetic oil is good enough for my 8v Skoda Fabia 1.4 MPI (AQW), and if 4L is enough oil to fill the car up again? If not, I guess I can go to Halfords and get some other oil.

When I did my oil change, I "vandalised" a 5l oil bottle - lay it on its side (the large ones), and cut 3 of the side on what is now the "top" - don't cut through the 4th side (the base when it's stood upright), but bend it back, so it forms a flap/sail, then put it in the path of the oil (the purpose of the flap is that if the oil comes out too quick, or you don't position it correctly, it will hit the flap and drain into the container, rather than overshooting onto your driveway). Once you're done, gaffer tape it up, and take it for recycling/disposal.

That engine takes 4l of oil, preferably 5w40 (Quantum Platinum, or similar), from what I can tell.
