What power cable?

Featured Replies

2 questions - what gauge, and where to get it...

Currently I have 8AWG fitted, but in light of the new install to replace my previous setup (which suffered a nasty pikey-rectomy from my car), I think I should upgrade...

New kit is as follows:

Alpine CDA-9812RR head unit

Alpine MRVF450 5 channel amp

Alpine SBR1241SB sub

Alpine SPR-176A front speakers

MB quart DKC169 rears, possibly being swapped for Mac Iron 16.2 co-ax's

1 farad powercap

All speakers and sub running off the amp.

Am I right in thinking this lot needs more than 8awg cable? I was thinking 4awg, I'm hoping nothing thicker will be necessary. Also, what's the thickest that can be fitted through the firewall without drilling, and under the interior trims?

Cheers

I got a fairly cheap "2000w" wiring kit off ebay, but really only for the 4awg and the 4awg earthing wire.

4 awg should be used for that i'd say.

And remember your earth must be the same gauge as your supply.

Go for 4awg. If I remeber right 4awg is rated upto 120amps.

yep agrreed 4 gauge...and dicth the cap you wont need it its just wasted space and money

I'd go for a 4 gauge wiring kit too :) You can get it through the firewall without drilling (there's a nice grommet which can be removed to feed the cable through).

As Ross said, remember to use 4awg for your ground. Any half complete wiring kit should include a big fuse holder to be used right after the battery and then a distribution block although you won't need the latter if you only have the single Alpine amp to power

You can either get one off www.caraudiodirect.co.uk or I'll put in a plug for my mates at www.kissmyice.co.uk :D

I'd be more inclined to go for 2awg than 4awg... I say that, and I'm going for 0awg on my own install...

As long as you also upgrade the big three or what ever they call them aswell, which will be fun on a cupra r ;)

Got to get the car back first before I need to worry too much though...

I've got a length of, IIRC, 10m 4AWG stuff kicking about that I'd let go for less than market rate - PM me if you're interested... :D

Rewired the Furby with 4awg power and earth tonight - so bloody chunky I can't fit the end cap on my amp (2 lengths of power a 2 of earth need to go under there as I have a powercap too) so all the cables are showing  but I don't really care, car stereos are there to be listened to first and looked at second!

The sound is so much richer and cleaner - the cable that was in there before was about 8awg power and and 16awg earth (I know, not matching, tut tut tut) but the worst bit was the cable the fitter used from the powercap to the amp - it looks to be 17 amp single wire on a 5 channel amp :thumbdwn: , that appears to have been the major limiting factor. But all sorted now and sounding sweet! Now to lay my hands on a load of sound deadening mat...
