Non Genuine Heated Mirrors

Featured Replies

I have purchased a pair of replacement heated mirrors from a ebay seller, on getting them I noticed the sticker on the box said vw passat 97 - 05. I removed to old mirrors as were not working to find that the wiring connections on the new mirrors were not in the same place. They are on the outside of the backing plate and the genuine ones it on the inside. The wiring wont reach yet the guy sent me a message saying he had sent loads out and was a skoda specialist and his workshop always got the wiring to reach and I should try again. Idont want to damage the car has anyone had any similar problems all help and advice would be great as I dont want to pull at my wiring. I have tested the mirrors plugged in and they do work on the connections. Is there a way to extend the wiring of the car and what exactly do I need to get. many thanks all.

Hiya,

I have a set of the fleabay anti-dazzle aftermarket ones - and no, the connectors weren't right! My kindly father got out his box of spade connectors, and extended the wires on one side. I'm not sure exactly what he used, but nothing fancy I would imagine - so long as it is waterproof.

The other issue, the mirrors i had sent to me don't quite fit into the black plastic backing plate, required a little bit of brute force, and a gluegun! Be warned

hope this helps

Which supplier? I ordered one yesterday as I managed to break the glass in my drivers on.

The supplier on ebay was grum1969 and he insists the wires will reach. NO WAY will they and as for the fitting when you pop the old mirror off you have to make sure that you clip the internals all back together before cliping on the replacement mirror. I now would advise everyone on this forum cheap ebay mirrors are ok if you dont need the heated part but if you want heated replacement mirrors without modifying the electrics then buy the skoda genuine ones from a dealer. I know they cost alot more but will fit and connect and work with no hassle. I will be going to my local dealer at the end of the month lesson learnt the cheap option does not always work.

grum1969 (Jorily) is usually good. If it is just spade connectors it should be easy to knock something together with some spade connectors, bit of wire, soldering iron, crimping pliers and heat shrink to connect them up. Modify the wires on the mirror itself.

VW mirror heating contacts are on the outboard side of the glass, As you've discovered!

You'll need to make up a loom to extend the wiring

2ea. 2.8mm Male and female spade connectors and four lengths of suitable wire 0.5-1mm2

Hi

Thanks for the reply I have bought 2 packs of female 2.8mm female connectors already attached to a lenght of wire and some male 2.8mm connectors and a pack of heat shrink tubing to make a extension loom. To attach to the original car wiring as I dont want to cut the car wiring. The heat shrink tubing should keep things waterproof I hope.

Strangely enough mine was also marked passat and octavia but the connectors were on the correct side they came from the same source

Hi,

Well thats strange as the supplier has never contacted me back after just telling me to try again as the wiring will stretch. I can assure everyone they will not and will not be buying from that rude supplier again.

Hi

I now have my heated mirrors working my wiring extensions worked a treat and the heat shrink tubing keeps it all waterproof. All you need is a roll of 5amp cable 2.8mm male spade connectors 2.8mm female spade connectors some heatshrink tubing a pair of pliers and my wifes super hairdryer. The only thing I could not get from Halfords were the 2.8mm male connectors had to buy a bag of 100 off ebay. Thanks for the help guys
