Oct vRS to Superb?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Have a MK1 Oct vRS, considering a move to Superb ownership. Looking at the 2.8 V6 petrol and seems there are a few bargains around.

Has anyone else went to a Superb from a vRS and if so how did you find the change?

Regards,

Neil.

Depends what you want from the car. Myself I woudn't swap from an Octy VRs to any kind of Superb. I own a 2.5 TDi.

If you want to go from car-type handling to boat-like handling, change to a Superb. You often get loads of free water thrown in with the Superb to make the boat feel at home.

Hang on - the water is supposed to be on the outside...

Seriously, unless you have a specific job for a car which is the size and weight of the Superb, it's best avoided. There are just far too many design problems with this car to make it a proposition for the average user.

If, like me you really do need the weight over the Octavia/Golf platform and are prepared to spend some time fixing all of VAG's stupidities then the Superb is a fair bet as it's dirt cheap now. I would only ever consider a 5 sp manual 1.9 PD - all other options are either unreliable or stupidly thirsty compared with the 1.9. The 2.0 PD is a disaster.

My Superb has been comfortable, reliable and economical - amazingly so for its weight and performance. I just can't believe how much time and effort I've put in correcting VAG's c o c k ups in order to make it reliable. Never again - I thought I'd paid the designer.

I would like to second all of Roto's comments, I went from Octavia to Superb because the Superb suited my work. I needed a car that could cover miles sometimes with a trailer and be economical, it needed to have at least 130 and have xenons for wet weather night driving so I ended up with a 06 UK spec 130 Elegance. Where I live all independents are very familiar with the usual problems of water ingress, front suspension, etc and most would check these even if a car was just in for an oil change. The designers were on another dryer planet when they came up with some of the stuff, the one that gets me is the parking sensors, there are cheap ones on EBay that cause no problems and yet VAG charge crazy money for their useless sensors.Another, the brake light switch, I think they are on their 7th design and still cant get it right.......... better stop now, mini rant over. Its a great car for what I do, just beaware of the well documented problems before you buy.

Just to be different I went from Superb to Vrs via an indirect route. I am happy to have and owned both.

As I am just finding out the Octavias have their own VW group design foibles (oil pickup, water ingress etc) but I find both Superb and Octavia to be way better than most cars out there.

All cars have certain "built in faults" that often appear in late ownership 2nd, 3rd owner on, and outside of warranty.

I'll just mention the 1990s BMW V8 debacle just to prove skoda arent alone. and then duck :giggle:

I had a 1.9 TDi Octy Estate before the Superb and while I don't regret swapping it there are times when I think I should have saved my money and just kept the Octy estate to be honest.

I owned a 07 2.0t petrol Octavia Vrs. I absolutely loved the car and my goodness could it fly when pushed. I traded to an 07 2.0td Superb Elegance (black with privacy glass and a load of extras - 3 years old with 8000 miles on the clock). The reason I shifted was due to at times the Octavia getting some 25 mpg, and the suspension, albeit great for road holding, allowed you to feel every bump in the road. Seeing the roads here in Scotland, this meant I was feeling a lot of bumps. I would also say the general feel of the seats etc. in Octavia wasn't as good quality as the leather seats in the Superb, which are excellent. I would also say you get so much extras with the Elegance.

I would go back to an Octavia Vrs in diesel, but feel you get an executive motor with the Superb at a good price. You can also hold a party in the rear it is so spacious.

I hear all the issues around the Superb and agree their are design flaws, but Skoda are not alone as I have had inherent issues with just about every car I have owned - er hmm - Orion 16i Ghia - Water ingress and brake disc issues, Golf Gti - rotten tail gates and brake callipers, Fabia Vrs terrible quality alloys and colour of seats, BMW's a long list!, etc. I have a friend who has a 4x4 Jag estate who has just spent some £2-300 replacing spark plugs due to the type... ouch!!

The good thing is with a Forum and people's experience you can stay on top of the issues and enjoy running a great car which represents value for money, for what you get.

Ultimately ask yourself, do I want a good sized family car which also delivers sports car driving and handling - Octavia Vrs is the best out there and I can vouch for that. If you want a big luxury family car, which delivers executive driving at a reasonable price, swap to the Superb as it is also the best out there. You can't go wrong with either, depending on what you want. If choosing the Superb, there are better models and go through the checks for the common issues before you buy. Best of luck.

Thanks for your comments,

Interesting reading, i too have come to know the problems with the Mk1, (ignition coil) (oil pick up) but there is something inside me that wants a comfortable cruiser (60 mile commute)

I fancied the 2.8 V6 (190) so i won't miss the power as much!

Anyone here have this engine?

I have just sold my Octavia pd130 and replaced it with an Edition 100 pd130.

Its not at all slow, I did think about a remap before I bought it but after getting used to it, it really does not need more power. Have you test driven the diesel variants?

I absolutely love it, the size gets a bit of getting used to but its a real comfy cruiser. Loads and loads of toys and more space than you could ever need inside a car. There is just 1 problem with it, the Mrs hates driving it. She says its just too big but she is used to driving a Yaris.

I just need to persuade her to sell her car and keep the Superb. As we are cutting down to 1 car, the Superb will do everything we need it to and return decent mpg. Much better than her T Sport will.

If you want a mile muncher.. superb is literally superb. Sure its got its problems, but what car hasn't these days? theres always some weird oversight that gets missed in the design stage. I would go for a diesel superb mile muncher though, and not the 2.5, that 2.8 is going to be super thirsty lugging the superb around. Its not a light car.

Re the handling, 80mph on the motorway is simply awesome. The car just floats at that speed. Dont take it for a cant down a country lane though, unless you want to feel like your riding in a 60mph bouncy castle. If you are prone to a bit of motion sickness, it will get you.

The amount of room in the car is absolutely stellar and if you wanna be taking people out an about, they will really appreciate it.
