oil catch can

Featured Replies

hey guys,

will be buying one of these oil catch cans soon, something like this, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1ltr-Oil-Catch-Tank-SKODA-VRS-Sport-Turbo-20v-/230579154144?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item35af96ace0

does any one know the diamter of the piping that i need to connect to the rocket cover and the inlet manifold so i can purchase the correct catch tank with the right nozzle size.

many thanks,

jordan

I've been doing some looking into an oil catch can and from memory the inlet/outlet diameters are 19mm (someone correct me if i'm wrong).

This is the one im going for so I can avoid having to reduce hose diameters etc plus it looks awesome ;)

Thats true but I haven't found any other catch cans with a 19mm inlet/outlet, plus in my oppinion it looks better than most of the ones out there, guess thats what your paying for.

tbh i prefer the look of the cheaper ones lol theres 15mm ones on ebay, a jubilee clip would just clamp it on :)

Out of curiosity are you planning on recirculating back into the intake or are you going to vent it to atmosphere?

im going to recirculate back into the intake, wbu? the rocker cover needs to breath so i thought it would be better if went back to the intake as the passing air surely has some suction effect.

how often would we need to empty the catch tank? best be very careful it doesnt get a mouthful of oil.

i bought this earlier this evening, http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=300439890757&ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT

Looks good mate, i've decided i'm going to vent mine, i've found a 19mm bung on ebay that i'll use to seal off the intake. I'm going to run a hose from the catch can outlet to a breather filter near the battery. It might be worth your time looking at some of the threads on the CCV mod (elephant hose mod). As for emptying it I will probably do it every 1000 miles or so, wont really know till its installed though. The main reason i'm venting mine is just to make sure theres no oily vapour going into the intake :)

but thats the idea of the catch tank? to catch the oily vapour? could you send me a link to the breather filter that your using? and ive read through parts of the ccv mod, which part in particular are you talking about? all the guys on there just vent the pipe from the crankcase to the atmosphere. no breather filter or catch tank. what bit were you refering to that might be worth a look at?

I done a bit more looking last night and it seems that venting to atmosphere with ot without a filter at the end produces a bit of smoke, depending on your set up you might not see it i.e. if it was a hose that ended at the underside of the car you wouldn't see it. I cant remember which thread it was but theres one of them that goes into detail on the CCV mod and catch cans, it was about 15 odd pages long IIRC. I've decided to have a go at designing my own catch can using drawings of the saikou michi design and i'll get my uncle to make it at his work.

I was planning on getting the Green Cotton conical fiter, theres loads of cheap ones on ebay though so might try them instead. I also just ran a google search for "oil catch can tdi" to see what else there was on other forums.

tbh i think you should just go rocker cover to catch tank and then back into the inlet. that way you will catch all the oil vapour and wont run the risk of the pipe freezing in cold weather, the filter should stop this but again i think it is more money that isnt needed lol

What inner hose size do I need to order?

Jubilee clip works wonders lol :) I just got a pipe to fit the rocker cover and then just tightened up the clip on the other end. No leaks :)

i just purchased a catch tank off ebay with 15mm connectors,my plan as above is to go from rocker cover to catch can then catch can to inlet

I purchased 19mm tubing (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/250750699433?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649)

just tried to fit the tubing onto the inlet and no way will it fit, seems small

anyone any idea of the actual size of the inlet so i can get the correct size tubing?

Thanks

The tubing you have looks very stuff! Mine is quite flexible and the boiling water worked a treat. As for the tubing on the 15mm connectors again because it's flexible and not that stiff it easily clamped onto the connectors :)

Was only like £4 from memory from b and q lol

right, might pop by b and q then!

was yours 19mm mate?

could you put pic up of your catch can fitted mate?

thanks

a lot of work/time effort for no gains....

It's stops the oil circulating and keeps everything clean. I'm assuming you don't have one. Not everything should be done for power gains, it's gaining in other elements Which is good for the engine!

i meant the fitting of a catch can....half hour job to block the intake and run a pipe down the back of engine to atmosphere.
