Diesle Loaner, What Engine Do I Have

Featured Replies

My Fabia is in for its 20k service and I have a loan car, its a 10 reg diesel but what engine do I have? It has a red dot on the TDi badge. Im impressed with its open road performance, a lot of punch but round town I dont like it as its noisy and not as responsive like my petrol. Seems to need a lot of throttle to make decent progress, and less flexible at low speed and needs a lot more gear changing than mine.

Being a facelift it was interesting to see the interior differences... I like the chrome dials and seat fabric feels better. However a closer inspection reveals its the same fabric as in the pre facelifts but has little bumps in it which made it feel better. Dont like the dark dash at all, Id miss the silver accents and I find the OBC not as clear to read too. Stereo is much better and this car has Dunlops which are much quieter than my Bridgestones and have a better feel at turn in.

So overall, some minor improvements but Im happy with what Ive got and I do prefer the HTP to the CRDi for town use. Got just 50mpg on a drive this morning that my car would done at about the same so not too good for fuel economy?

I think that the 10reg had the 1.9 or 1.4.

If it's noisy I'd go for the 1.4 as I test drove one as it was very noisy and the car rattled at tickover. Certainly both my old shape VRS and 1.2 3cyl Greenline are smoother.

Its definately a 1.6 CRDi, as its a facelift and it says so in the fuel filler, just doesnt say if its a 90 or 105bhp. I had a Golf a while back with a 1.9 TDi which was a much better engine I think.

You have the 105Bhp 1.6 CRDi. The facelift shows that it will be the new common rail diesel and the red "i" indicates that is is the sporty one. Someone correct me if i am wrong.

mo its the same with the TSI, black square idicates the 85bhp version, red is the more powerful 105bhp version. Would be a 1.6 if its a "10" plate, they stopped using the 1.9 PD in the facelifted version.

Is there a sticker in the boot or in the service book that gives you the power output in KW?

Cheers, seems it is a 105hp after all... in which case Im really not impressed and its done 15000 miles so should be loosened up a bit. Are they all a bit iffy round town then, you really do have to stir that gearbox to get any oomph... and its still only doing 50mpg, glad I dont have one!

SORRY lemonvrs I have the crtdi 1.6 105bhp with only 300 miles on it I was doing 80 ish today in 5th and at 2.5k rpm with 56mpg and this car red lines at 5k rpm so can not understand ,was you driving in reverse because what you saying does not make any sense at all, sure you have'nt got the 1.4tdi 3 cylinder because I have both models and the crtdi is quiet were as the 3 pot is not, makes no sense :wonder:

Speaking as someone who has personally gone from a 1.2HTP petrol to a 1.4 TDI Greenline I can see whats going on here. When I first got my diesel I was rubbish at driving it. Still thinking like a petrol driver. Wrong gears, too lower revs...the list goes on. Now I have gladly forgotten how to drive a petrol properly I can fully embrace the unique way that you drive a diesel like the Fabia. In fact when I drive my other halfs 1.4 MPI I make a right hash of it.

Now I know what I am doing and have unlearned how i used to drive the HTP the car is now fabulous.

Noisy did the original post say ? Probably the gearbox shaking itself silly as it tries to spin at idle. If I tried to put my car in 4th at 30 it would practically stall. A petrol will sit there in 5th.

Edit: Oh and its spelt 'DIESEL'..... :wonder:

I will shut up now B)

Hi Lemon, Raisbecks explanation is, as ever, probably the right one!

I'm waiting for mine but from what I have read on here with the 1.6 TDi CR for both economy and driving the revs need to be kept up so 4th or even 3rd around town.

It will be a change from my 1.9 TDi which is happy at around town in 4th and in 5th at 35mph upwards.

105 BHP has TDI all in RED Could be a 90 bhp? The engine has to be driven more like a petrol.

Didn't early versions also have the 1.6 CR in 75bhp guise. I know the 1.2 CR makes this power in the greenline but pretty sure the 1.6 also has this output.

yes test drove this one as the stealer did not have the 105bhp and to be honest the 75 seemed ok but a little tired but the 105 is totally different drive, granted a little linear has not got the all or nothing aspect of the old pd's

I drove it back to the dealer differently and yes it is a different animal then, but I still wasnt keen. It just didnt feel as much fun as my HTP and that diesel racket would drive me mad, on idle the car sounds awful :giggle:

Everything seemed a lot heavier, clutch, gears and throttle. I just found it a bit too much bother unlike my car. I did appreciate the oomph out on the open road though, that was impressive

This thread is interesting. Some of the reviews do mark the diesel down for noise. I never had a Mk11 Fabia diesel but I did have the Mk1 1.9Tdi Elegance, a cracking car for performance and economy, but the engine was a bit clattery at idle and low speed. I have to agree with lemonvrs it felt much heavier to drive. I am getting far more pleasure driving the little 1.2 and having come to it from a huge heavy BMW 2.8 which was a real big heavy car also, I just love the light responsive feel I get from the Fabia. Obviously it's up to the individual what they want from the car and I'm sure theres a model to suit all tastes and that they are all good in their own particular way.

Exactly, we are all different and want different cars... I guess Im not a diesel convert :giggle: Having said that, my wifes old Golf Mk3 TDi was a hoot to drive and very different to the Fabia I borrowed.... however being a Mk3 Golf it was pants quality wise.
