I've been to my dealer to have this problem sorted - they changed the drivers side rear caliper and guess what... noise still there

I went back and the techie thought the pads were contacting a slightly different area on the disc with the new calipers - basically, I don't think they have a clue and fobbed me off. I agreed to give it a few hundred miles and if the sound was still there, bring it back in.

The noise seems worse first thing in the morning, which made me think about oxidation on the pads/discs or something similar. If I do a bit of hard braking, it does seem to stop, but sure enough returns again next morning...

Any advice would be much appreciated - might help if I can point the dealer in the right direction

Because the rear brakes dont really do much they never get as hot as the fronts on day to day driving. This time of year when its wet and salty corrosion will quickly build up on the brakes overnight, the rears dont have as much force going to them so they dont burn it off as quick.

Probably find theres no mechanical defect, we get a few complaints of this at this time of year but none during the summer months.

some nice high speed braking should solve the problem....:D

I used to get this on my car, but since getting bigger front brakes + better suspension.. the electronic voodoo makes the back brakes work more, because its more stable under braking..:)

no point in taking it to the dealer then ross?

car is filthy though due to the salt on the roads, will give it a good jet wash, including the wheels which are realy dirty

I would think they will tell you pretty much what i have tbh. Keep an eye on it and see if it gets any worse.

Quick way to find out: - find an empty stretch of road. Accelerate to a decent speed (not necesarry to go over speed limit, just find somewhere where you can go say 50+ mph without endangering others).

Brake hard. Repeat a few times. Should get the heat in ;)

One to try maybe - apply the handbrake enough for the pads to contact but not enough to lock the wheels... this should obviously be done on a clear road and at sensible speeds... should clear any surface corrosion

I too have got what i describe as a grinding noise from my rear brakes on my vrs. i only notice it at the last few seconds before i reach a complete stop. I bought the car new a couple of months ago, i took it to the dealer who told me that its probably an accumulation of dust/muck and that the calipers need a strip down and clean. They also said it was not covered by warranty. I've only done 3500 miles. Had a look at the calipers with a view to doing it myself but looked a little too complicated than i'm used to. I've read some of the other threads and will try to warm up the brakes with some hard braking as suggested. :o

I had a rumble from the rear brakes one morning about a month ago - sounded as if the anti-lock was kicking in early. Happened after jetwashing the wheelarches so thought some debris might have got somewhere it shouldn't. Wasn't there the next day so haven't worried since

the rumbling noise is now gone i gave the car a good clean yesterday and i jet washed the wheels and brakes and the drove a few meters with the handbrake on slightly and now the noise has gone

I tried the suggestion by JUT (thanks) i.e. applied the handbrake a little whilst driving. This got the rear brakes nice and hot, and lo and behold, the noise has disapeared. Hope this helps others with similar problems. :)
