Headlights

My Phillips xtreme bulbs are better than the Osram Nightbreaker that i tried first. The xtreme seem to light further down the road. My car uses a single bulb for main and dip with a solenoid gate giving dip beam. Its rubbish. The dip cuts off so sharp you really cant see a damn thing beyond the cutoff point. At least with reflector type lights you get some light spill on dip to see down the road. Our 2002 Fabia 1.4 MPI has much better lights than my 2010 Greenline. Big step backwards imho.

The only advantage is that HID are supposed to work in projector type lenses so you can retro fit easily.

Yes its illegal unless they self level and have washers. Hopefully the law will change.

I even considered finding some powerful luxeon leds's for the dips or different fog lights that can work almost as normal dips..... Next time at the garage I will see if they can raise the light level for dip at all while still being legal.

I set up the headlights on our MPI myself after hitting a deer at night and replacing the unit. Not sure how its done on the projector lights

Just gone for a night ride trying the Nightbreakers out and although I saw on improvement, it wasn't as much as I hoped. I can see further and the main beam is a big improvement but dipped maybe not so much.

Think in future, if I can afford it, I'll be speccing my car with Xenon (HID). vRS is my first new car and I've only been night driving for a few months so didn't realise how big an improvements HIDs will be. That said, unless the aftermarkets kits actually become road legal, I won't be buying them.

I'm beginning to think the whole headlamp projector unit Skoda has gone for is a load of c**p tbh :dull: Why they didn't have Xenons down as option is beyond me.

similar story with the Philips CrystalVision 4300k bulbs I'm afraid. Don't get me wrong, they are a noticeable improvement on the OEMs being much whiter and slightly brighter but not much further throw.

I reckon they're as much an improvement as I'm ever going to get without getting a true HID replacement kit. I won't be getting one of those though as they're illegal no matter what anyone tells you.

I shan't bother getting any more aftermarket bulbs to try either as I don't think any will offer a vast improvement over the OEMs.

Xenon HIDs would've been the first thing I specified at (almost) whatever cost. We have them on the Octavia vRS and they're worth every penny. I was gutted to learn that they weren't even an option on the Fabia vRS but VW will have to try a lot harder than that to make buying a Skoda a deal breaker!

Headlights on my MK6 Golf are fairly crap, I think they are on most current VAG cars. Only saving grace is I have the cornering foglights on mine and they do help a bit when going round corners. Dont know about you guys but I really notice a massive difference in light output when my car is dirty. Headlamp washers as a standard feature on all UK cars wouldnt be a bad thing! I think they are in other parts of the EU.

Unfortunately the law and MOTs are going to change next year. http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/186601-mot-changes-2012/page__view__findpost__p__2275339

Retro-fitting HIDs without washers or levelling will FAIL the MOT.

Well went along to my local halfords and could not find any of the bulbs suggested, so popped up to a company I have used before and picked up some Ultra power bulbs, going to go for a wee drive tonight to see what they are like.

The best place to buy the bulbs are either eBay, or PowerBulbs. I used them (Powerbulbs) last year and got great service, very quick delivery. Also If you search on here or on the internet you can get a code for a 10% discount. (15% off as you are a Freedom member)

Ah Ok, that explains why I could not find them in Halfords, mind you the bulbs I had in the car were Philips.

I took the Fabia out last night and have to admit the Ultra Bulbs are much better than the bulbs the car came with, very impressed with them, now I just need to change the sidelights as I have a mixture of yellow and white, best £20 I have spent through and Skodagirl is impressed witj the new bulbs as well.

Uh oh, this has dissapointed me a bit about the CrystalVisions.

Looks like I'm going for 4 x XtremePower bulbs.

Can someone confirm that both low and main beam on the VRS are H7 as the manual doesn't make it clear?

Would be interested in how the Mtec perform.

I had a pair of mtec bulbs H7. Very white output but dont illuminate anything like as far as the Phillips xtreme

Just ordered 4 Philips XtremePower H7 (2 Packs) off eBay, came too £42.96 delivered, which isn't too bad for 2 packs!
