DSG: S mode uses only five gears?

Featured Replies

Well on the six speed DSG my car has when you select S mode it drops to the next lower gear (ready to overtake) and won't go higher than fifth. But a while ago I thought I saw S6 in the Maxidot. But it disappeared quickly. Ah. Now I know why! If you are in S mode and click the cruise control on it goes to S6 since it knows you are not planning to overtake! Clever!

I imagine on the 7 speed DSG the highest in S is 6th? And the same as above applies.

Yes, in S mode, you can just about get it into 6th gear, but most of the time it's in 5th. Turn on cruise control, and it immediately goes into 7th gear.

Never noticed this before. Cool

I noticed this too the other day when in 'S' mode but with the cruise set around 40mph; neat.

Also the more I'm driving the DSG I'm thinking what a great gearbox. Whether it is normal, or it is its adaptation to my driving style, I'm finding that in regular 'D' it will change down the box and give a degree of engine braking when slowing down and/or braking; unlike a usual slushmatic that gives no braking help and then catches you in the wrong gear if you want to accelerate.

It is normal. This incarnation of the DSG is brilliant. Engine braking is phenomenal. Touch the brake pedal going down hill and it changes down, that might not sound like much, but my previous DSG didn't do that, but the 5 speed auto in my previous BMW's did....playing catchup, about 15 years lateremoticon-0140-rofl.gif

I testet this feature this morning driving to work (1.2 TSI so the 7-speed DSG). When driving around 50 mph the gearbox used 5th gear in S mode, but when I activated the cruise control it immediately swiitched to 7th! When I deactivated cruise (from the stalker, not touching the brakes so no speed changes) the DSG changed down to 5th again! What an amazing car!

This was at fairly slow speeds, so I am not really sure whether 6th gear could also be used without the cruise control if the speed is sufficient.
