Tyre pressure monitor

Featured Replies

Can anyone tell me how the Skoda tyre pressure monitor works? Does it measure the pressure directly or does it work from knowledge of the distance travelled per rotation? Most importantly does it function well?

Many thanks for any input

It works badly! I've had 2 punctures and it didn't notify my until the tyres were a write off.

It works off the ABS sensor and the number of rotations compared to when it was set.

I have read posts critical of the TPM but the system on my previous Mk2 Octavia VRS worked very well, alerting me to punctures very quickly. On occaision too quickly, and wasnt able to indentify a problem until a couple of days after the initial alert .

I had it fitted to my new car also.

Thanks for the info and the warning. Very sorry about your tyres. It seems to me that the indirect system has inherent difficulties, in particular a slow response - as you unfortunately found. I think I will so some research on direct systems and in the meantime keep kicking my tyres.

Yeah its the best bet - useless unless you have a slow puncture really. With the 18's on you can't really tell if you have a flat on the back unless someone tells you or you have the window down and hear the tyre 'slapping' the road.

I spent £280 on tyres for 3k miles and 8k miles :'(

Me and the mrs haven't had much luck....over the last 12 months we've gone through 6 tyres! All punctures apart from one MOT failure which was a bulge.

...And car manufacturers have the cheek to not offer spares anymore as statistics show you only have a puncture once every 9 years!

Many thanks for your input. Jrw's reply has rather unnerved me, and despite your good experience I think I will look further into direct systems, before coming to a decision for my new car.

What car are you looking for? If you are looking at the Octy i think it is standard on a few of the models (I know its standard on the VRS).

I usually just walk around the car anyway before i drive off so always know. If you get a puncture on the road and goes fully flat, chances are by the time you can pull over the tyre will be fubared anyway. Any system will only work if you have a slow puncture.

I have a passat cc which has a direct system. Real time monitoring of each wheel. It's aimed more at the us market where the original rotation based system was deemed to slow.
