rear wheel bearing query

Featured Replies

Hi, I think my offside rear wheel bearings on the way out. Bit screechy when going round LH bends (sounds rather like a pheasant/cockeral!). Does this sound like a bearing problem? It makes no difference if I put the brakes on, so I guess it not them? The truck did pass an MOT in Nov with no advisories to the Offside rear bits and I've done about 3k miles since then. I'm after any advice and tips on changing the wheel bearing people could offer (if thats what it is?) Do I need any special equipment (hydraulic press etc?)I've never done one before.

Thanks in advance

you don't need a press to change the rear wheel bearings

so does this sound like a bearing?

nearly forgot, are all felicia rear bearings the same? I'm sure I heard that all vag smaller fwd cars use the same rear bearing? Or did I dream this?

sounds like it may be the spring off the self adjuster has fallen off and is getting caught between the drum and backing plate. jack it up (in gear with wheels chocked etc )and give the wheel a spin and check for play in it.

wheel bearings usually drone (sometimes sounds like a washing machine on spin)

As above a wheel bearing will "drone" and the tone will generally change with speed.

Yep as mentioned above, rear wheel bearings are a doddle to change. A thick pin punch to knock out the old races. To get the new ones in an appropriate sized socket, or with some care the old bearing races, can be used to seat the new races. Remember to check the bearing for play after say 50-100 miles and adjust if necessary. Do not over-tighten though, they only need be finger tight.

Thanks Felicia 16V and anewman!!!

i didn't know what that droning/washing machine noise was coming from my front wheel!!!

WELL NOW I DO and my MOT is due on the 23rd March too!!! so more money by the looks of it. happy days :'(
