been offered a skoda octavia

Sorry folks, not sure if this is in the right section, if not could a moderator move it to the correct section?

Anyway, hi, my name is Barry and have recently been offered a SKODA OCTAVIA 2003-2004 Diesel 1.9L Manual 5 doors CLASSIC TDI.

Its an ex-taxi, a 55 plate, and has done slightly over 190,000 miles, and owned by my father in law.

It has had 2 owners, he has owned it for 3 years with no MAJOR faults.

Although I have driven a skoda before, my last car was a Renault Megane and got robbed, so treading very carefully.

My worry is the miles, it certainly appears to be a lot of miles for a car relatively young, taxi or not, not sure if I should go for it or not?

To be fair, it is in MINT condition, like I said, just worried about the miles

Hi Barry, perhaps you could clarify things. You say it's an 03/04 Octavia but on a 55 plate???? Also if it is an 03/04 then it's an Octavia Mk1 - so your question really needs to be asked in the Octavia 1 section. If you could clarify exactly what model the car is and give a price that you are being offered then perhaps we could say if it's worth it or not. You also say it doesn't have any major faults - does this mean it has lots of minor faults?

Myself - I'd probably steer cleer of an ex taxi as they tend to get abused.

If its a Classic - isn't it a Mk1 anyway which they have made up until recently just for the Taxi market?

Hi, yeah its an 05 plate, however when I put in on an insurance quote it came up with them details, 100% its an 05 plate Skoda Octavia, asking for £1500

TBH i wouldn't bother....depends what you want really but its a Mk1 octavia in basic taxi spec and is especially made for the taxi market.

Thanks mate, as far as the miles are concerned, is this a problem?

Not really a problem but all depends on what history you got....A new turbo, gearbox, clutch could be just around the corner at that sort of mileage if it hasn't been well looked after or not got any service history.

Sorry again, really should have said, got the full service history, granted I havent seen it.

To be honest, not really looking for something great to look at if im honest, if it gets me from a to b and the miles isnt a problem, just a bit worried about the miles.

Thanks for the quick replies mate, appreciate it

Miles wont be a problem if regularly serviced and not thrashed.

£1500 defo HPI check it before you do anything if your shopping around most sites will give you 4/5 checks for under £25 a lot better value than paying per check but well worth it for that money there are LOTS of options for a lower mileage diesel A-B car for same size shop around

to be honest if it been well maintained 190k is nothing for a diesel, I had a Bora Tdi that had done 195k and the engine was still fine when I sold it for an octavia

It should be OK as long as it has been maintained properly. The garage I use offers loan cars, usually Audi A4s, Passats, Golfs and all have over 170k on them. All customer ex-cars or auction bought. They all drive sweet as a nut so I would not worry too much. If it has been taxied it probably has been very well looked after and maintained. Drivers can't afford to be without a reliable car - it's their livelyhood. But do be wary - maybe they are getting shot because it is becoming unreliable?

Check: MOT; Service History - especially oil changes; Recent Clutch; Suspension bushes; tyre wear; shocks all round; brake pads and disks; doors - locks and windows (remember these will have been used more than usual!)

Which city has it been most used in? What are the state of the roads? Many potholes etc?

Maybe consider these points and if it looks like it needs a bit of work then use this as a negotiation on the price.

HTH

Nick
