Tyre "egging"

Featured Replies

Ive just had to take one of my rear wheels off due to a puncture and i have noticed that every 4" or so on the inside of the tyre seems to be small "egging" and ive checked the other tyre and its the same on that!!

By inside of the tyre i mean the inside of the bit thats on the road not the wall, is this a fault or does anyone know of what might be causing this??

Probably those speed humps that you have to straddle.

Not heard of that before. Did you get a photo?

Are both tyres the same make/model? Could be a deficiency,....

no, not got photo, as it was dark, will get one tomorrow. both tyres are the same and as far as i am aware new 6 months ago when i got the car from skoda. the front tryes are fine its just the rears!! :S

I'd think about getting further evidence and taking it up with the tyre company concerned.

The chances aren't great; but you won't know if you don't try :)

all the scuffs you see are all the way round and when its pumped up they are like little bumps in the tyre.

Plus i think there might be some uneven ware as you can see in this pick, so im guessing the trackings out on the rear??

They don't look like very new tyres to me - that cracking/crazing down the groove seems to indicate they are aging a bit. What's the number next to the DOT on the tyrewall? This will tell you how old it is. e.g. 1806 will mean it was manufactured in the 18th week of 2006 etc.

Your rear camber is out too, but you've noticed that already.

how mush is that to get fixed? same as tracking? £20-£30?

as for the DOT after that is has some random lettere/numbers then in a square says 4307 so im guessing end of 2007?

Week 43 is the second half of October sometime (close enough for Government work).

I'm not sure about the scuff marks as such, but you look to have excess outside edge wear on that tyre, which suggests a rear alignment is needed.

Too much neg camber, good for handling crap for tyre wear. Had the same tyre wear with the fabia after fitting the FSD's.

I just spoke to a tyre place and they said a common trick dealers do is move the front wheels/tyres to the back when they have an issue and put new ones at the front, as you dont see the inside wall of tyres on the rear as easily as the fronts.

Im takig it in saturday and hes having a look. but think im gonna have to go for part worns!! :'(

Yep, as said - way too much wear and bad setup to get anything from a tyre company. I was thinking dodgy batch, but after seeing that it's dodgy setup that's probably caused the issue.

A proper setup on some decent equipment will be £60-100 dependant. But £30 for a cheap Kwik-Fit/ATS job. 'Go cheap, go twice' springs to mind and I'd find a reputable place in Warrington capable of sorting this properly. I'd be inclined to give TDI North a shout and see if they have equipment, or know someone who they'd be happy to recommend.

You want someone akin to: http://www.wheels-inmotion.co.uk - but local! I did use a place up near Preston last time, but they've since stopped doing this sort of work...

Use Align My Car to search for a place that uses Hunter 4 wheel alignment equipment. Can't go far wrong with that. Searching for Widnes/Warrington there appears to be a few places within 10 miles of you

Also, how long have you had the car? I assume these are the same tyres on the car as when you bought it?

nearest to me - Wheel Alignment £161.00 :o no chance im paying that much!

Good link that; bookmarked

Hi Mole,

Thanks for posting the pictures.

They look exactly like the tyres I had to scrap after 10k miles from new.

I will get my camber checked and adjusted.

Golf-Fiend thanks for the links to the alignment places, found one near to me.

Depending on tyre size the cost of alignment will save you pounds in replacing tyres early. On the Vrs a pair of michelin ps3 is nearly 300 so bad alignment will be costly if it halves the life of our tyres. It also transformed the handling

WHAT!!! No way should it be that much!! Mine was done through this search and the price was about £40-50 I'd suggest that you phone a few other centres on the list even if they are further away just to get some prices for comparison, then go back to the nearest one and tell them your findings and ask them to price match.

£160 is quite frankly rediculous!

Where was that?!

near the bottom, admittedly it is a Porsche garage.

skoda are going to check the suspension on Monday as i questioned whether the tyres should be doing this after 6 months!

Ahhh yes 9M, near Bank Quay. Yikes - used to charging people more than is needed I guess! They do create some amazing stuff down there though, if it's any consolation!

Best of luck with it. But I'm sure we can find you somewhere else decent, BUT that crucially doesn't charge the earth....

It'll be their hourly rate that'll rocket the cost I'd imagine.

Well, what do you expect asking a Porsche specialist!! Are you quite mad!?

In fact, you are not mad - they are. When you dig into it a Porsche and any other VAG car share a hell of a lot of similar parts - everthing from ignition locks, keys, interior light fittings, coolant caps, throttle potentiometers, etc etc etc. All exactly the same except it has a Porsce part number and an additional decimal point added!

You might want to check their website ;)

But you're right - for normal 'car' type stuff, you don't expect that sort of charge. But as mentioned, it's the time they take to do a full alignment for you. And they'll charge that time in exactly the same way to if they were making up a bespoke part for a Porsche Cup racer, or similar...
