Wheels won't come Off

Featured Replies

Went to have my new tyres fitted yesterday only to find that the security Bolt and wheel nut was stripped and will not undo.

Never had the wheels off since I bought the car.

Been to buy a new set of bolts

Is there a special tool can buy or is it a hammer and chisel job.....................Not best please emoticon-0145-shake.gif

They can be got off by using a bolt extractor set. Basically it involves drilling a pilot hole into the bolt head, then using a reverse threaded tap/die (can never remember which is which lol) to screw into the pilot hole.

You then need something for leverage from memory.

The bolt heads are hardened 'anti-drill' steel usually-you may need to buy a few drill bits or else find a very good one!

It's a b***h of a job really, I have heard of something being welded onto the bolt head to give grip, but it's a lot of hassle-you'll need to disconnect the battery amongst other things.

Good luck!

Learn from me - change your wheels every few months and you won't have a problem

A conventional stud extractor is unlikely to work on wheel bolts.

You can buy a wheel bolt removal tool. I have a set of four (different size) of these - they have a spiral blade inside which bites into the head of the bolt.

Draper, Sealey, Franklin etc all make sets. Alternatively I know that the AA/RAC vans carry them. So if you see one parked up then he might loosen it for you for a fiver?

Use hammer and chisel only as the very last resort.

Cheers Eric, I think that's what I was thinking of!

If I'd have changed my wheels after a week of owning the car I would have had the same problem.

Did you ask at the tyre fitters, they often have a tool or know someone who has.

failing that stick "locking wheel nut remover" into google, even halfrauds do one

This is rather like the set I have:

Cheap and pretty effective. Take this to the tyre depot (or a local garage) with your car, and get them to use it with their air impact wrench. These are MUCH better when used with an air impact wrench. Will definetly get the bolt out.

I'd get them from Machine Mart: exactly the same (they've even used the same picture), but £3.80 cheaper:

Chav option: just hammer an old socket over the top - lots of good quality hammerage required but its theraputic.

Is it the standard Skoda locking bolts or after-market. The McGard locks have a rotating collar to stop just that.

Most manufacturers of the locking bolts have a removal kit you can buy.
