Handbrake Sticking

Featured Replies

Hi,

In the past week or so I have noticed a groaning noise from the rear brakes when pulling off from traffic lights etc. At first I put this down to corrosion on the discs or setting off too quickly without fully releasing the handbrake.

This morning, late for work, I jumped into my car, released the handbrake and prepared to set off, but the handbrake had seized, the Fabia refused to pull away. So I gave it some welly and released the clutch, with a bump the car lurched forward and the handbrake was free. When I arrived at work I felt the rear discs with my hand, the rear left disc was quite hot.

I got home this evening and jacked the left rear wheel up and released the handbrake and tried to spin the wheel. There is quite a bit of friction, I need to put some effort into it to make the wheel turn.

I assume that there is a problem with the calipers or there is a self adjusting wear compensator on the brakes that has become corroded or seized which is causing them to lock up.

Does anyone have any suggestions of how to diagnose this problem and the best way to fix it? :)

Thanks for reading
