Paint seems to scratch easily

Featured Replies

I have a Metallic Silver Octavia which is just coming up to 2 years this November. I just cannot believe how poor the paintwork must be and considering the Metallic finish should add even more protection. I must have about 20+ scratches on nearly every panel of the car. On Monday next week I am taking it back into the dealership where I originally purchased it for athorough examination and going to ask that it be resprayed under the Skoda Paint Warranty as it's just not good enough !

How would a metallic paint provide more protection? It's a clearcoat that sits as the top level of the paintwork :S

I'm sorry if this causes offence, but you have scratches on every panel because of the way you look after the paintwork, your washing/care techniques and practices, or the roads you're driving it down. Or a combination.

My Octavia is now 6 years old, and although I've machine polished it twice now, the starting point did not have any of the problems you describe. So I don't think you can pin this on a manufacturing defect in the painting process or the paint and clearcoat used. As such, I cannot see how your request to have this damage corrected under the Skoda paint warranty would be honoured.

Have you any photos of the car and the damage you describe and we can try and advise further? Perhaps on some corrective treatments that would be possible.

Its all down to the way you look after the car, Skoda paint, as with all VAG and BMW paint, is very hard and tough.

Just shows how individual experiences vary.... my '08 car is silver and has only a very few chips in the lacquer layer from road stones grit etc... I do take care when washing it not to scrub grit into the paint from dirty sponges and cloths but aren't you supposed to take that precaution anyway ? I do use Autoglym polish and resin glaze though so perhaps that has helped. I never put it through automatic car wash. Probably kiss of death actually saying this and when I get it out later the paint will have all flaked off an be lying in a heap on the ground :D

I have a 2005 model and under each door handle there are a mass of fine scratch marks that can only be due to ones fingers and finger nails something I have found on my other vehicles. I also have some stone chips on the hood and on door panels, but it is the door handle recess scratches I find annoying and points to soft paint.

It will happen on any paintwork, it might be the design of the door handles, but I can say 100% that VAG paint is not soft and never has been!

With the design of VAG door handles that is an issue, and it's an area that's very difficult to rectify and polish properly. My theory is that it's mainly caused by people wearing rings, and who fully grip the door handle while opening the door, leading to scratch marks in the recess.

Come and have a look at my front bumper - you will change your mind then! Very soft and now starting to flake.

Going to put a claim in for a front bumper. It is only the front bumper that suffers this issue and it hasn't been resprayed/repaired. I think that they are sprayed seperately on the production line to the rest of the car so potentially a factory defect.

Many thanks for your replies Folks.

Wardy, the point I am trying to make is that I am one of these people who takes great care of my Cars making sure I only hand wash it, wax it etc. and almost riddiculously fussy about not parking in narrow parking spaces and away from other cars as you are always likey to get the odd 'Numpty' who will open their car door onto yours etc. Will try and upload some photos but my point was that I've owned a variety of other makes including Renault, Citroen, Volvo, Vauxhall, Nissan, Ford etc. but this car's paintwork 'marks' so easily that there must be something wrong with the paint process

I have a 2011 Octavia VRS in Solid Red and think the paint is appalling (worst since my mark 1 Ford Fiesta!) It chips really easily (A stone chip on wing, rear door touched my watch and lost some paint, roof got scratches on but I don't know how.)

Had a VW before which had decent paint and a Seat before which was fine too. The Skoda is very noticeable different in its paint formulation.

This is worth a look: http://www.chipex.co.uk/

As is http://www.drcolorchip.com/ (needs importing from the US though; we had a GB on this stuff a while back on here)

Or look into your local Chips Away franchise. Work quality does vary depending on location though, because of their franchise setup - so I'd only proceed here if you know of positive recommendation for the unit that covers your area.

In spite of the name...They wont repair stone chips!!!

That depends entirely on the franchise you use Chris, unfortunately. Depends on the skills of the individual who's signed up, and also which 'level' of franchise they've gone for.
