Not bothered with this firmware, as it's still very much in beta. As for the postcodes, then I'm not sure why you haven't got 7 digits, as this combination of firmware and maps does give full postcode support in the UK. As you say, this could be because the Irish maps haven't been updated to include the support. I wonder if the 2760 + v7.0 maps gives you support?

I'm guessing the loss of HDD space is because the maps have been loaded into the media partition, rather than the map partition. Probably, just a quirk of the beta.

To downgrade, you need to be able to get into the full hidden menu. From the sounds of it, the firmware you've installed has disabled this. The only way to get it back is with VCDS/VAG-COM. Once you've got it re-enabled, then you can go to the software downgrade option. After selecting it, put the old firmware DVD in the drive, and then press <, > and i/Mic. On reboot, the Columbus should see the firmware DVD, and offer to start the process. Don't think there is any other way around this.

I think that this firmware will bring some very welcome improvements, particularly in the way that POIs are handled. Speed camera alerts seem to be catered for in the new POI database format, so I'm hoping that the firmware is updated to be able to display them.

Just had another thought. Trying inserting the downgrade firmware DVD, and then resetting the unit with <, > and i/Mic.

According to Josi on vwnavi.com, this should start the downgrade process. Of course, 38xx firmware could have changed the way that this works.

There are no Post codes for Ireland yet..See this article

Postcodes could be introduced across State by year's end (2011)

http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/ireland/2011/0104/1224286701565.html

If you are on about the Garmin codes the comment on the link states..

Several companies developing global positioning technology – notably Garmin – have devised all-Ireland digital address codes that provide precise addresses.

While these codes will not provide the basis for the national system, the Department of Communications said these companies were free to tender.

Bart2 can you check one thing on the map.

Is the new ring road / Tunnel in Limerick on it.

Hi lads thanks for replys dfsuperb don't no bout Limerick but the new Waterford to Dublin/ Kilkenny road not on it so don't bother updating ! Ray:agree I will send de discs over next few days ok mate been away for de weekend

Irish Maps are over a year out of date. The maps don't contain either the M3 or the vast majority or the new M8. A bit much for an almost €40k car.

I agree why didn't Skoda use TomTom their always updating their Maps oh well av to wait another year lol

This is true, but VAG only have access to the maps provided by various country authorities to Navteq who provide the maps for the columbus, and I guess that a year out of data maybe the latest available. This has nothing to do with VAG, as other Satnav providers will all have the same problem. It was not that long ago that the only roads covered in Eire by satnavs were the major roads.

Not true in IRL I'm afraid.

Navteq do indeed supply the maps to VAG and also to Garmin. Garmin do have most of the missing roads refered to in previous posts and a quick check of the Navteq site will show a bit of the M3, all the M8, M9 is there except Kilkenny city part and the new junctions on the M50 (except M3) are present in their data.

If Garmin can provide updates 4 times a year via downloads why can't VAG. Not only that but Garmin can provide those updates for the lifetime of a device for approx €99 not €200 per out of date update on CD.

It's a pity we couldn't just buy the updates direct from Navteq.

Can any of ye get the DvD to playback while driving lads ?? i have tried few different firmwares none i tried work, i heard 2600 firmware does but cant find a link for it

Are de roads in de Waterford not interesting enough :)

It's not supposed to be able to do that for the following reason:

109. Television sets

(1) No person shall drive, or cause or permit to be driven, a motor vehicle on a road, if the driver is in such a position as to be able to see, whether directly or by reflection, a television receiving apparatus or other cinematographic apparatus used to display anything other than information :-

(i) about the state of the vehicle or its equipment;

(ii) about the location of the vehicle and the road on which it is located;

(iii) to assist the driver to see the road adjacent to the vehicle; or

(iv) to assist the driver to reach his destination.

(2) In this regulation ‘television receiving apparatus’ means any cathode ray tube carried on a vehicle and on which there can be displayed an image derived from a television broadcast, a recording or a camera or computer.

There are various hacks, but I strongly advise against trying it. Even if it's for the "front seat passenger" (the usual excuse/justification), any sudden noise or exclamation from said passenger will distract. :(

Not trying to be smart or anything, but in this, the regulations specifically seems to refer to a cathode ray tube (CRT). The screens in the cars (as with almost all new TVs, monitors, etc) are LCD, so therefore I'm sure you could argue your way out of it... :)

That said, I agree with Ray. It's a very bad idea. I was in a taxi a few months ago where the driver was watching TV. He wouldn't turn it off when I asked, and I wasn't able to tell him to stop and let me out as we were hurtling down the motorway at the time. It was a very scary ride, but it was the first time I was in a superb, and I was amazed at the amount of space.

The Regulations were made in 1986 and have been amended piecemeal ever since. I take your point, but rest assured - anything upon which a picture can be displayed nowadays - including a laptop computer - is covered.

Incidentally, I'd ask that if anyone does have a "solution" that they not publish it on here, as I believe it would be contrary to forum policy and etiquette (having learned my lesson!). :)

I can think of one legitimate reason for wanting this, namely to use the Columbus as the video source for rear screens for the kids. I used to use a Pioneer AVIC-X1 in my Octy vRS, and it was the DVD video source for the rear screens in the back. I used to start the DVD whilst stationary, and then switch over to the map display whilst in motion. In order to do this, I had to disable the VIM lockout (which was much easier on the Pioneer units). You simply had to fool it into thinking the handbrake was on.

Now, I'm hoping that the Columbus firmware might be clever enough to understand when rear screens are connected, and only disable video output to the in-dash screen, but I've no idea if this is what actually happens.

With respect, Andy, not the same thing at all, as the front screen wasn't showing the video, which was the OP's question. It would be good to be able to power rear screens from the head unit, but I suspect that the demand for this might be sporadic, compared to those independent rear seat players which would be much easier to set up.

Ray

The video out and rear screens remain active without any modification at all, even when driving. Only the front screen is blanked, but the audio and rear video out continue to function.

Sounds as though no mods are required, then. :)

Maps are nearly a year behind i have 2010 Superb Elegance with latest maps and firmware Kilkenny/Dublin road not on it , do u have the 7 digit postcode for uk ??

V7388 maps are still based on data thats at least 12 months old, since VW seem reluctant to pay for the latest data. In the past we have made hybrid disks based on the much newer BMW data, but I am not sure its possible to to this with the latest firmware and map generation. The hybrid disks also lack, lane assist, topology and speed limit display because these are not supported on the BMW Pro system.

I will have a look later. I did have an option to enter UK postcodes but just haven't tried it.

Select, new destination, then address, then press on TWN/PCD and enter a UK mainland postcode in this field and then click on the road name.
