time for tyres

Featured Replies

seeing as though i have no grip when the road is anything like damp/wet these days i think a new pair of boots is in order for the octy.

so.

has anyone had experience of Bridgestone's S03 tyre on a vRS ? and am i right in thinking a 225/45 R17 tyre will go straight on the standard wheels thus making it the size of choice ?

obviously the new tyres will be going on the back so i'm not running illegal tyre sizes front to rear and to wear the OE tyres down to replace them with another pair to match.

if the s03's are pants then opinions please, i wanted something that offered better all round grip than the conti's that are on it now but would still give good life.

Thanks

Nige,

225/45/17 will fit straight on but I think 215/45/17 are a better fit.

In a recent Autocar tyre test the S03s came second over all to the F1s but it came first in the dry weather tests and second in the wet weather test. The F1s came first in the wet weather test but last the dry weather tests.

The S03s are also a little cheaper.

I'm going for some S03s next time around...have tried Rossos and F1s...I think the F1s look nicer..squarer in the shoulder but perhaps the Rossos edge it over all for me...of course they are more expensive. :rolleyes:

Hopefully Alex will reply he's running S03s at the moment.

thanks for the info, i'd like confirmation on the sizes to if anyone else is running different tyre sizes to the standard.

i thought about rosso's but a friend in the trade reckons the s03's will be better all round and give better life span.

i ran F1 gsd3's on the front of my old R19 16v and they were like you say very good in the wet but not all that in the dry.

just need to check the prices he can get me them for now.

I was under the impression that 225/45 was the closest to the standard profile?? I am looking for some soon so if anyone else can confirm this.

It is in terms of giving the smallest speedo error.....but I actually think the 225 width is perhaps a little too wide....the tyres bulge a little.

Check out the tyre bible in the links section to see what the difference between the 215 and 225 width make in error.

Spooky.It's my MOT in two weeks.Thought I was wheel spinning a bit too much and I ought to check the tyres.

Yep it appears I'm running on slicks too :(

Any idea of cost,cheapest to the fairly expensive on the ones mentioned above?

Thanks Adrian i'll do that, i have never actually seen 225's on a VRS so will take your word for that. :)

Mine had them on for about 130k miles - no problems.

If that was one set, what make where they :rofl:;)

In total it was 14 sets :grumpy:

I've run 225 for 20k miles and have no probs but they do bulge slightly on the 17'' alloys...anyone know what the J value is for the standard alloys......should give you an idea of what be used.

Incidently I'm running 18'' alloy now so 225 are fine.

I did have inner arch rub on full lock and destroyed both front arch liners at the handling day....car was too low. :o I wonder though if I would have had the same problem on 215 at the same ride height.

14 sets!!! Glad i only use mine for pleasure :) Lucky if i do 5k a year.

>11,000 track miles didn't help, if I'm honest :D

Running 225s on the standard alloys. I dont think they bulge at all, they look fine imho.

thanks for the info guys... and the pic Mannyo.

i had a quick look on mytyres.com or something and the s03's are going on there for about

From the Toyo website..

205x50x17 = 639mm

215x45x17 = 626mm

225x45x17 = 637mm

So closest is the 225x45...

I recommend Toyo Proxies.. I just replaced the T1-S set I had on.. these lasted 21K miles... ( Hard driven by the way! ) and I have two tyres with 3.5mm tread on them .. that will be ideal for trackdays...

I've replaced these with the new Proxies T1-R .. cheap at

Worn tyres you say? Try a wet trackday on these puppies :D

I love P Zero Neros.

You getting on OK with them then?

Oh and the bald one? It was gripping better than other tyres that had tread on in the wet. Only problem was standing water and then it was "Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!" :D :D :D

I love them.

Chasing my brother in law throught the New Forest just before Christmas in his Furby vrs I had way more grip than he did on his pilots.

Thing is it's getting chucked around more so they're wearing quite a lot. I need to stop enjoying them so much and calm down.

does a 225 tyre actually look much wider than the standard ones? any pics to compare?

Perhaps I didn't have enough air in them.....not so uncommon for me. :rolleyes::o
