new car or old

Featured Replies

Having purchased a superb last June which was 6 months old for £19000 i am now told the value of my car has dropped £1800.

my question is this, is it better to buy new or nearly new ore 3 to 4 years old and probably save 50 percent of the new price. but you might then have to pay for repairs to your 4 year old car.????

Residuals only matter if you intend on selling your car!!

Now with something as nice as a mk2 Superb i can't imagine anyone wanting to sell it.......

......and you could get the bus and save another £10K! It's all personal preference isn't it?

Hi

I either buy my cars new or poss ex demo and keep for years

Normally this works for me but made a mistake with current car.

Looked at Superb estate back in about April last year (when it was first launched) but did not like dealers attitude or trade in offer so kept Audi as it was running great and decided to wait for discounts to appear, Mistake!!!

Diesel injector pump went, £1500 for the part plus £1000 labour! (not main dealer, can only guess their price), then alternator went in France, about £600 then needed discs and pads plus new tires all round and new suspension arms to pass MOT.

So spent about £5000 in last year, fingers crossed no problems before V6 arrives in April.

So you take your chances, Audi had run perfectly for 8 years not even topped up the oil in 130,000 miles then bill started arriving, time to bail.

Buying brand new, just drive-off the fore-court and you have given away about £2,500 right there for starters.

At 6 months old with super-low mileage £2,500 less than new price, not counting extras added to standard model fittings, by first owner.

I would like to know why when you buy a new car you wash and polish it have it serviced every 12 months treat it better than your best friend then and at the end of three years you are told its lost 45 percent of its original value where does that money go and why.bill

All cars depreciate in value - even if you buy second hand. However a new car will take a bigger hit in year 1.

Looking at the way some folk drive it is a gamble buying a used car because they lack any idea of mechanical sympathy.

I prefer to buy new and know what I am getting.

6 - 12 months old for me usually, with 5 - 10k miles.

Means that someone else takes the first big hit but I have the reassurance of 50k-60k miles or 2+ years of warranty. My current Superb (1.8 SE Twindoor) was 6 months old when I picked it up with 5k on the clock but at £14,250 was easily £5k under list and probably hasn't lost too much more.

Justin.
