Remap in South Wales

Featured Replies

Thought I'd spread the word, as I had real trouble finding someone reliable, recommended and cheap to remap my VRS in South Wales. Granted, the bloke I eventually used was also very hard to find, in that he's not got his own website, but he came very highly recommended from a mate who I trust...

The bloke I used, Chris, is based in Treadegar and does not do remapping full time, hence he's able to charge less for it. He does exactly the same job you'd pay £300+ for with Revo, etc; a custom map tailored to what you want. I'm now pulling 175bhp and about 50 extra Torques... Basically the turbo doesn't give up, and you get a much smoother pull through the range. Takes him an hour tops, and he'll charge you £150.

Give him a ring - 07737409215 or 01495723700.

Generally with £150 maps...it will give up :D

I'm sorry if this sounds brutal, but you really should have taken a trip across the bridge to somewhere like Unit 18. The simple fact is that people who properly remap cars do it for a living. They develop a map and they sell a map. Based on their reputation they sell a few more maps until they become an 'industry leader' like Superchips, MTM or Revo. Or they develop their own maps and sell them as part of their general tuning business like JabbaSport or Shark Performance.

People who don't usually do remaps but can supply a remap - like "Chris" tend to have to buy that remap in. You can buy one in from Richard Washbrook (which is what Unit 18 do) or from JabbaSport, Revo but they make sure that the price they sell the map at is enough so they can recover the development cost and support further work, plus it includes a bit of profit for "Chris". Now, if "Chris" wants to sell a remap for £150 and his time actually costs £50/hour (not unreasonable) and he wants to make a profit he's not going to be selling you a remap he's bought from a person who did any development on it. He's probably got a £100 DVD from ebay with a map for every car going on it and he just copies that file across to your car and away you go. Until it stops, at which point the £150 you saved on your remap looks like small beer compared to the several hundred you're shelling out because your turbo is kaputt.

I've spoken to LOTS of remappers and they all say the same thing. It's perfectly safe, yet none of them will ever 100% underwrite the repairs to your engine if anything goes wrong. They might sell you an insurance policy on top of the basic remapping charges, but if your car is old or high mileage it won't pay out anyway.

Anyway - I could rattle on but I'm sure you get my point - Don't buy a remap from someone called "Chris" who works off a mobile phone in his van. It's not smart.

OK, so Chris's affliation with eliteremaps.co.uk means nothing...? Don't judge a book by it's cover. My mate's been running his remap for 3 years, with no problems whatsoever. Furthermore, Chris guarentees his work, keeps his kit and software right up to date, writes the maps himself while you're there, works in vehicle diagnosis as a day job and doesn't work out of a van...

He charges less as he doesn't have to make a living from it, but will openly admit that he doesn't make much from it at that price. I'm simply spreading the word for people who don't want to pay twice the price for an identical product...

Well, I don't know what he's sold you, but the PD130 remap on the eliteremaps.co.uk website is;

Skoda Fabia TDI 1.9 PD 130 (RS) 130 hp 163 hp 310 NM 405 NM £ 249

Note that it refers to RS, not vRS, so the remap wasn't done by anyone in the UK.

I'll be honest, I've never heard of eliteremaps.co.uk so actually, no, "Chris" might as well be affiliated to essaitchoneteeremaps.co.uk as far as that goes.

Look, let's be honest, he's about as likely to stand behind his remap as tell anyone his second name....

And the fact that he hasn't even got a van tells me he's probably a proper amateur just playing at remaps. I can write you a map while you're there. Would you know? How would you tell? You couldn't. Whatever he's sold you, it's not an eliteremaps map is it?

Calm down puppy! Bottom line is, when my engine goes pop, you can have the satisfaction. Until then i've got 150 quid in my back pocket to take your mum for dinner...

I'd leave the personal insults for another time if i were you.

But, you get what you pay for.

I'd still rather pay the extra to go to a trusted company with a solid background, and knowledge of the car.

So actually, you're pimping your dad's tuning business?

OK. I think if you said your dad had done your remap you'd have got a lot more interest. As it is you just look sad. And busted, of course.

Oh, and my mum says she doesn't go out with losers

Busted!

:moon:

Blimey, I bet you boys gave yourself a big old pat on the back when you found those! Have you really got nothing better to do...?

Maybe, just maybe I had a good experience with a remapper in south wales, at a cheaper price than anyone else I could find and wanted to spread the word. I can assure you my name's not Geraint, it was my first remap and i've never used a forum like this before. You all seem like a right laugh though...

Aye at your expense :giggle:
