When you accelerate hard....

Featured Replies

a ) what RPM does it go up to?

Mine usually goes to 4.2k for the turbo to kick in. Today though, in 3rd, I hit the peddle in anger (stupid BMW driver :wonder:) and it went up to 5.5k and this was in 3rd.

b ) from a standing start, if I floor it or even put accelerator down to 3/4, the wheels almost always spin up no matter what the conditions.

Did this when at a set of traffc lights and a white van was next to me and trying to queue jump the traffic and me. Was having none of it. I'm use to the wheels spinning up now but I think he got worried as he only got to 10-15mph and pulled in behind me :giggle:

Just wondering about other's experiences. Is this another case of the dunlops being rubbish or just the fact that 1st gear is just to get the car rolling in the vRS?

1st gear is impossible for hard acceleration in the VRS I have found.

Wheels spin for fun.

It really is a case of getting used to the gear ratios, knowing when power can be applied.

I find for general power needs, there is a sweet spot, about 50-60% throttle, in 2nd and 3rd which just brings the supercharger in nicely, plenty of power, and it sounds nice too.

Flooring it in 1st will literally get you nowhere. Even 50% throttle in 1st is pushing it.

Just take some time to get used to different power in different gears, it takes some getting used too, but is rewarding in the end.

the accelerator isnt an on/off switch.

Any car will spin up @ 100% throttle on a standing start.

On the prevuious car it was ninja to get of the line without spinning up. I found that i short shifted to 2nd and let the torque pull me through. If anything id say this was quicker as it spent less time wheel spinning. so maybe try manually shifting up earlier. (not sure if the DSG would change down automatically again though?)

Yeah it will, the VRS is quite bad at any percent in 1st gear though!

You are right, changing up to 2nd helps massively.

The DSG auto downshifts when slowing back down, can take you by surprise sometimes if you haven't realised, and put the power down thinking you are in 2nd, you lurch forward quite a lot!

1st to get rolling, into 2nd then progress. And yes, use the paddles.

It could also be helped by tyre choice. Literally everyone will be on the OEM specified rubber, so that's either Dunlop SportMaxx or Conti SC2/3? So it'll need a little while before the higher milers and less sympathetic ;) tyre users come around to trying something else. Pretty sure that initial traction issue can be at least improved though.

What about gentle rolling in 1st then just before I put my foot down, paddle into 2nd? Might have to experiment....safely

'Gentle rolling' doesn't really fit if you're trying to get away quickly? Depends what you're trying to achieve :)

The best result, for most productive progress, is to hit the sweet spot just before the tyres are about to loose grip/adhesion through spinning. So get on the edge of that area in 1st, then paddle into 2nd.

Not driven many petrol DSGs and none with the Fabia's dry 7-speed version but the principle's the same emoticon-0148-yes.gif

You also don't want to just pin the accelerator to the floor either, as that generally sends too much power to the front wheels too quickly - and it will also generally take longer for the gearbox/clutch/drivetrain to catch up. Better with a more gradual approach...

spot on. Martin Brundel did a feature a few years ago on F1 starts... its called the "granny" start,, you want just a "squeek" from the tyres, then you know you've got it right.... EVO magazine this month however got a polo GTI to 60 on a damp track in 7.1 seconds by simply "fllooring it" :giggle:

Ah very good emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Must be quite good fun in the vRS now, with it's fancy gearbox ;)

Not finished Evo yet this month, so will go and find that Dave, thanks :)

no bother, they also pit the new vRS agaist the lancia delta integrale wierdly enough :dull: why I don't know, but unsuprisingly the 220bhp 4WD integrale beats it round the track, they do however give the vRS a good write up in that article....

I'm now up to 1600 miles, and still learning the gearbox.... I will become a Jedi master ! ;) the engine is loosening up nicely, got 40+ mpg on the way back from penrith today with the roof sign on (bad aero) on and overtaking 3 vehicals on the way

wedit: you are welcome to drive mine next time I see you :)

Still not finished evo myself however I did read the vRS vs Integrale article. It dud get a decent write up. For a wet track the lap time was expected.

Still not seen or driven the new one yet. Will have to try and get to the next ne meet and let Graham take me out in his cupra.

+1

Or Dave - you don't fancy coming to the next NW meet do you?! Week on Sunday.... emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif

I wouldn't worry too much, drop it into "S" and it'll quite happily change up at 7k when you give it a boot.

I will be at the Edinburgh meet tomorow :) working nights a week on sunday :( gonna be at weston supermare and jurassic end of march, and maybe the yourkshire meet on 20th march

ok, out of interest with this thread, I have just tried my first "fast" standing start, dryish road (conti tyres) in sport, simply full throttle from standstill... worked a treat, minimal wheel spin, cracking traction, simply dove forward and off

spot on.

Cool. Take it it has some form of traction control? If so what's it like with it off.

From what I read these 1.4tsi seem idiot proof for quick starts.

indeed, I simply floored it, and it did it perfectly. the traction control was on, they also have an electronic diff lock, the system brake a wheel if it spins faster than the other

Yeah this XDS system works well as a limited slip diff, just amazing how it finds grip even when you thinks there's none.

I don't know about that. I keep getting caught out by the hill hold control. Must try harder :giggle:

I have my personal believe that the conti tyred VRS will be quicker than the Dunlop VRS off the line as like has been said above its the tyres that are the limiting factor in power transmition.

However the VRS is powerfull and relativly light so will fly off the line Sport mode seams to be the idiot proof way to get the car going quickly with Drive being for the rest of the time.

Is a shame the DSG7 doesnt have Launch Control. I gather the wet clutch DSG6's with more than 170ps had a Launch feature which would have helped massively in traffic light grand prix's! haha

It is also a shame that Self Control is not a feature fitted as standard to everyone.

Hi Mike,

Think you've taken my post a little too seriously but never mind.

I was trying to make the point that its a shame the DSG setup in the vRS variants (all sporty VAG products for that matter) arent tweaked from their standard offerings to provide a more sporting drive. Sure its a great box and the shifts are lightening but i'd prefer to be in full control of my gearshift selection in S mode; perhaps with the exception of coming down the gears when at a near standstill, its pretty good at that.

There are remaps available now but I just think its a shame VAG dont do something about it themselves. Also think the launch control feature would be useful in S mode, particularly for those that partake in trackdays etc

Still waiting for 'Launch Control with suitable mechanical sympathy' to come along

If you've ever experienced it in a suitably equipped car, I think you might know what I mean :o

My Dad has a PDK equipped Boxster S, that has Launch Control but I've not been able to convince him to try it out haha

Not at all - I don't even take myself seriously :giggle:.
