Can idiots do it?

Featured Replies

Guys.............. :smirk: im starting to notice my crapness with my car is costing lots at garages

Im thinking i need top mounts and the bumpstop/ restrictor things took of the front coilovers.........

Can idiots and crap people do this without breaking their nice red octy :giggle:

Do you need anything odd??? i have sockets and the basics but ive never got more involved than stereo builds and installs so im scared emoticon-0106-crying.gif but £50 p/h to mechanics add up and ive spent all my savings on wheels

im guessing i may need spring clamps??

or is this more than a car on a jack job :S

can be done mate but you need a ring spanner and allen key to take the top nuts off.

Its a pain to get the threded bush off unless you wind down the spring seat so its right at the bottom to loosen the preasure on the top mount.

Easy when you now how. If you need the car tho I wouldnt do it. as you might need to go get tools.

good luck mate

Coil Spring compressor clamps about £10 on E-Bay.

Choice of long or short sets of clamps are usually about that price.

i got spanners, and allen keys :smirk: are the stops threaded are they??

the Altea is sat here most of the time too

make sure your key fits in the top. 7mm iirc not one thats in a normal set of keys. at same time as the key is in the top of the strut, you need a spanner on the top nut too to stop it all spinning. hold the key still and turn the spanner so as not to turn the strut pin.

once they are off its easy really. youll be fine mate.

just get them hands dirty and crack on lol

If the nut is the one I am thinking on, does it not need to be a dog-leg spanner (think that is the proper name)? Still I guess easier enough for Lloyd to see if his spanner fits.....

sssssssh :giggle: you said it was our secret lol

yup offset or crows foot spanner required, or as my new pref method is airgun......

If you're new to this; be careful with the spring compressors. Make sure they're on properly. I always use four per spring as my friends Dad lost part of his face when a spring compressor let go.

Not trying to scare anyone but they can be dangerous.

****!! :(

four.....jeez not even sure there is room to get four on, my favourite method is an angle grinder to the old suspension....assuming you dont want to keep it of course

I did mine with two... and my face remained the same as it was when I started the job.

I think sivrs said he did his with some *massive* jubilee clips :wonder:

I admit four is probably over the top but the tale about my friends Dad is true. He had two spring compressors on & the springs bound with wire. A compressor slipped I think but whatever the reason he was in hospital for a while.

I've also seen a couple of guys @rsing around at work take off a spring & take it up & drop it off the office roof (still compressed). Bl00dy hell did it fly!

I've done a few springs but I have to admit they make me nervous. Better safe than sorry though!

Oh, I agree. Most definitely better to be safe than sorry.
