Castrol Edge 5w-30. VW 504 000

My dealer gave me 5w-40 fully synthetic when I asked for a litre? Not sure about the VW 504 bit.

I had to put this oil in the car just yesterday as the oil warning lamp had come on - with just 1200 miles on the clock!!

The 5W-40 will probably be VW 505.01 spec. It is used in PD diesel engines (like the mk1 vRS) that don't have a DPF.

VW 504 00 for long life service intervals (Castrol Edge, etc)

VW 502 00 for regular service intervals (I use VW Quantum stuff)

My VRS is normal servicing, so the cheaper 502 spec stuff it is emoticon-0148-yes.gif

i,m confused as to which grade to use. the vw code for fixed servicing is 502 which is on both 0w-40 and 5w-30 grades.any ideas as to what grade oil it leaves the factory with?

Can't say specifically, but at a guess it will be the 5W/40. i know it has been pretty cold recently but the 0W would be a pure arctic grade product. In reality there is not much between them apart ftom their low temperature viscometric properties, and provided you use the same brand, the additive package is more thaan likely going to be the same, the viscometrics being derived from the use of different base stocks.

Ask your dealer (probably the service department) they may know what the factory fill is.

Aye, I started on the Castrol Edge stuff when I needed a top-up but since found it unnecessary.

I have a friend who can get cheap trade VW parts, so I got the oil for £16 for 5L :p

I've not yet had to top up since my 1L fill...not even used the full 1L bottle yet...bugger! emoticon-0108-speechless.gif

Aye, it is. :)

Once I have used the 1L of Edge fully up, I'm just going to refill the bottle with some of the Quantum stuff and keep it in the car, just in case the oil light decides to hissy fit at me when I am miles away from home!

I am keeping on top of the oil level quite regularly though since the first top-up.

this is not just for you stu, but all of you who have had to top up, how have you/are you/ running in your cars? I'm up to 2,100 miles now without needing a top up, (i've never had to top up any of my new cars, never put a drop in the fiat in 107k, had a saxo I ran to 145k witout using a drop) and I always run them in by driving "normally" for example, with 14 miles on the clock driving home from the dealer, full throttle on the motorway slip road, bouncing off the red line to pass traffic and join the motorway, ect... yes it does get driven gently, but when needed it gets the beans. would any of you cringe to use fullthrottle and full revs in a new car? I beleive it helps......

I'm not looking for an argument, I'm just curious if the people who have had to top up, have run in in the same way I do, to try and find out if its how the car is driven from the start that defines oil use, or just that each engine is different?

Thanks!

I couldn't tell you how mine has been run in mate, as it is an ex-demo car, came with 5000 approx. miles already on the clock, so I consider it run in.

I imagine with it being a demo it has been booted a lot during the first 5000 miles.

After topping up my oil, the level has barely changed in weeks. In fact, I can't see any discernible difference since the top up.

Mines a simple 1.2 and has done just over 4000 miles without any noticeable oil useage

I know this is a Vrs thread but thought it worth mentioning. I am told if you have the 1.2 three pot it is important to make sure only 5W-30 oils are used as 5W-40 will wear the cam chain and could cause it to fail. It seems the modern day engines are far more 'oil specific' than they used to be when I had my Austin A40!!
