winter tyres for the new vrs

Featured Replies

Snow socks are a was of time as you are limited to the max speed and distance stated by the manufacturer...and they look worse to put on then chains. Snow tyres over here in the UK are NOT spiked! They are "standard" winter tyres as per Germany, Italy, Switzland...etc.......they are a tyre made using a different rubber compund which works much better a temps lower than +7C and they have a different tread pattern (more aproppreate) for winter....deeper blocks and more "snipes". I've been using Michelin Alpins on my 14" alloys in winter great B)

Aaah, studd-less tires! Those works good on damp roads and snowy roads...

Studded tires are still to prefer tho, it's more important to have the ability to break on black ice then on mildly moist roads, it's not the damp roads that usually caught you offguard ;).

Spiked tyres over here in UK I don't think are road legal!...so winter (studless) are what we get........mind you we don't get quite the same snow/ice than you do! Also there is no legal requirement to fit winter tyres (even studless) for certain times of the year as per cerain countries!! B)

Okay, strange that studded tyres would be illegal... Oh well, like you said. You dont get our -40 celsius winters...

Been covered in a few posts mate. Search 'winter tyres vrs' and you'll find a few posts dated late January. Quick run down though :p

  • No winter tyres are available in 205/40/17. Only Skoda use this tyre size so no manufacturer makes them in this size.
  • Winter tyre manufacturer starts up in July/August time and is the best time to buy them for the UK. Even places like mytyre etc still have no stock.
  • If you're planning on owning the alloys long term, don't bother, as grit + salt will eat them and they'll be degraded after 2-3 winters.
  • I think many people reported, including myself, that the vRS isn't that poor in the snow. Sport mode is especially handy. Thick snow, even with all year tyres, you'll struggle though.

Hope that helps mate

Found these by Wanli @ £77 each, I don't know if they are suitable.
