winter tyres for the new vrs

Featured Replies

Just ordered a furby VRS for her indoors to complement my Octy VRS. The dealer is suggesting that I also order winter tyres on alloys as in his words the furby DSG struggles in the snow! Had a look around the net and I'm having trouble finding any winter tyres in the 205/40/17 size. I know spring is slowly upon us but Im tempted to get things in place now. Incidentally he cannot give me a price as yet for the alloy/winter tyre combi until gets clarification from Skoda UK. Does anyone have experience of the VRS Mk2 in the snow? Any suggestions? Im sure the alloy/tyre combi wont be as cheap as just winter tyres.

Been covered in a few posts mate. Search 'winter tyres vrs' and you'll find a few posts dated late January. Quick run down though :p

  • No winter tyres are available in 205/40/17. Only Skoda use this tyre size so no manufacturer makes them in this size.
  • Winter tyre manufacturer starts up in July/August time and is the best time to buy them for the UK. Even places like mytyre etc still have no stock.
  • If you're planning on owning the alloys long term, don't bother, as grit + salt will eat them and they'll be degraded after 2-3 winters.
  • I think many people reported, including myself, that the vRS isn't that poor in the snow. Sport mode is especially handy. Thick snow, even with all year tyres, you'll struggle though.

Hope that helps mate

I have winter tyres in this size..205 40 17..so youre wrong I'm afraid

I got them from MyTyres

Unfortunately thay have sold out

Ours are Raoadstar Wiguard Sport Winter Tyres..I paid £82 each for them in November

They were fantastic..The car just drove normally on sheet ice as well as 6" of snow

I'm now after some 17" alloys to fit them to..Its cost me £40 to have them fitted and now another £40 to fit the summer tyres back on

Drop down to 16" wheels, pick up some VW steelies from a a Golf/Beetle and go fit some 195/50/R16 tyres.

You can go down to 15" which opens it up more to wheel availability, but you can't fit the bigger front discs/calipers of the Audi's then ;) If you never intend going bigger brakes then you can go all the way back to Mk3 Golf GTI's for their 15" wheels or Corrado VR6 too.

I bought 16" Beetle steels off ebay for £40.

I was looking to get steel wheels with winter tyres for my 2011 Fabia vRS however I can't find the car listed on mytyres.co.uk. I've read somewhere that the wheel fitment is the same as the MkI vRS so I've entered that into the website.

So can anyone confirm the following wheels would be fine.

6 x 15 5 x 100.00 x 57.00 ET: 43.00 5-hole steel wheel (8000)

Vredestein SNOWTRAC 3 M+S marking 185/55 R15 86H (max 210 km/h)

I got a set of Polo 16" alloys off eBay, plus 4 lightly worn winter tyres

Cost me 170 all in

I'm considering winter tyres, but will probably just go for 205/40/17's on original alloys, and let the tyre place keep my summers... until summer!

Ive just ordered winters for mine, Pirelli Sotto Zero in 205/40 R17 from camskill for £125.20 a piece

last i checked still 12 in stock

It all depends on how badly I'll need to drive this winter. It's not so much my own ability to drive in wintry conditions it's everyone else. Last thing I want is someone crashing into my new car. If I need to I'll get a set of 16" steelies and get winter tyres for those. What's the cheapest winter tyres you can get? I'll probably leave my car at home anyway if it's really bad

I'll be fitting 205/45/16 Winters on the wife's Fabia MII Vrs.

My octy PD Vrs will be having 205/55/16 winter rubber

It's strange as I emailed skoda customer services about this only yesterday. Got a call back today and had this quoted at me

"for tyres you will need to get 205/40 R17 84W and for tyres and wheels you'll want 185/55 R15 6J x15H2ET43."

The first parts of both made sense to me but the wheel bit of the wheels and tyres confused me. I'm off to see a "tame" garage about it tomorrow to see what they say.

What do you think about Skoda's respons?

I bought a set of GoodYear Ultra grip 8's in 195 65 15. Slightly "faster" than the standard wheel size but the vRS has a Winter Tyre Mode in the computer which can set the speedo to +/-5mph

It's a speed warning for the Tyres it does not alter the speedo. Read page 25 of the Fabia MII Handbook

Oh right, I thought it adjusted the speedo... Well they're only 1.2% different so well within any tolerances.

Can they be driven on normal tarmac?

I am not sure.. but I think u can. (tyre have spikes to grab the ice.)

Spiked tyres can be driven on tarmac, but dont expect a quiet ride, or the spikes to last that long

Just get winter socks for the tyres

No worries with the tyres with spikes in.

Had that on every earlier car, the only downside versus summertires was a little worse grip on tarmac...

Way better then socks, chains and all the other humbug-solutions...

Ice not a problem 6 foot snow drifts are a nightmare
