312 upgrade spongy?

Featured Replies

Just fitted 312 kit to my Fabia, new discs, pads and bled the system. However the travel on the brake pedal is much longer although modulated. Is this normal? Can people explain the differences from the upgrade

Thanks

Dave

They work, just you have to press the pedal further, ie the braking range is larger, I have fitted new discs and pads all round and all brakes have been bled, wasn't sure if that effected anything?

Mine put me thru the screen

Same here.

Are you sure they've been bled properly?

Yep, garage did it 3 times as they thought they were going to be tighter, they do stop just more travel on the pedal?

That doesn't sound right. What fluid are you using? Did you use fresh fluid when you fitted them?

One of the main benefits of the upgrade is improved pedal feel and better modulation.

Yep fresh fluid throughout system, I can find out tomorrow what fluid but the garage is a good one and have used them for years with no issues, what fluid should be used to confirm?

I have only driven 5 miles with them so far so maybe its them bedding in a bit, the discs and pads are all oem.

Advice from AP on bedding in. Could be useful for you:

Although ignore the bits about colour changing and bell housings! The basic theory is sound though.

I've also used the Lotus advice to good effect with past brake changes/upgrades. You do need to pick your location carefully though :)

I hope the garage bled the brakes using the Skoda tools. If you use the 'standard' pump the pedal to the floor with the bleed nipple open, you can reverse the seals in the master cylinder. This gives spongy pedal with long travel. Pump the brakes with engine off to deplete the vacuum for the servo. Pedal should be rock solid and near the top of it's travel.

You may also be experiencing a thing called 'Diesel Creep' of the bigger brakes.

Skoda use a special piece of kit to modulate the ABS valves as the system is bled. To bleed brakes the conventional way, I place a suitable block of wood, under the brake pedal, to prevent it being pushed to the floor as the brakes are bled. If too much air got into the system, and the ABS unit has air in it, it will need a dealer visit to have the brakes bled using the special kit dealers have.

Ok so this would be in addition to the master cylinder? Basically I will ask if they use a special tool to modulate the ABS valves. If no chances are they have put too much air in the system which can not be removed unless a special skoda tool is used?

Just been through some other forums and there is a mention of a bleed nipple of the master cylinder, anyone have knowledge of this?

Also reading about VCDS needing to be used in air in the ABS? Will go in tomorrow and ask some questions, may need a trip to vag :(

New pads will give a spongey feeling until they bed in.

I have had new pads before but this is different, changing calipers i thought may have been an effect but starting to think its air in the system.
