Shuddering at 100km/h

Featured Replies

Hi

Hoping someone will we able to provide some advice. Have noticed our 2006 octavia 2.0 tdi combo has started shuddering sometimes when the car gets to 100km/h or so. Its done 170,000 kms. It feels like it might be an engine thing and will eventually take t in to get looked at but just had second baby and can't do without it at the moment.

Any ideas as to what it might be and whether it's an expensive fix ?

Thanks

Mike

My first guess without further information would be a wheel not balanced correctly. If you drop down a gear but stay at 100 km/h does the juddering change? If it doesn't then the first thing you need to do is get your wheels rebalanced.

Put it in neutral and allow the car pass through the 'shudder' spot. If there still is a shudder then likely to be wheel balance. If not then something more complex like engine mounts.

Remember ,coasting in neutral may damage your health.

At precisely 98-102kph, mine makes an ever so slight, on and off humming/vibration sound. On for about a second, then off for half a second, then on for a second, then off.... and so on.

It is barely perceptible, passengers say that they cannot hear/feel it but I can and it drives me insane knowing that I can hear it and others can't!

At first I thought it may be tyre noise or wheel balance. But even with my winter rims and tyres it is still there. I have played with letting it coast at that speed and it is still there. Doing that speed at high or low revs it is still there. Even with the car heavily loaded it is still there!

This has lead me to believe that it is some panel / bumper / under-body-guard part of the car which resonates with the air passing over and under the car at this speed.

Has anybody else had this or can they offer any advice. The best advice will probably be "Just ignore it" which is what I will probably do.
